A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.
Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.
The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.
The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.
Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

We spent a couple of days and saw the War Memorial and Parliament House on one day, and the Museum of Australian Democracy (highlight) and National Gallery on the other - with some driving around in between. Canberra is a very small city and quick and easy to get around by car, but we needed Google Maps to help us navigate.

Loved canberra, it’s a clean city, and laid back compared to others.
With digital maps it’s really easy to get around. Not congested, easy flow of traffic.
Easy access to the tourist spots. And worth the visit.
The lookout, war museum, Parliament House are all impressive
Had lunch at marble and grain. Really wonderful.
The jetty is also worth a visit, nice chill out spot by the lake.

Canberra was great with all tourist spots an easy drive from each other. Loved the War memorial, very moving to think of all those lives lost so we can live as we do in the best country in the world! New parliament house was also very interesting.

We loved the museum and national gallery.
We loved the museum and national gallery. I found the city sidewalks smelly early morning after weekend use.I will return to see the balloons. Having the app was helpful. Pizza cabin near the galleries was chaotic, slow service, wine and coke on menu not available. Long wait, our family had to split up and take restless baby home after no service for 40m. Easy parking, always something of interest to look at. For us the Walk in medical centre at Dickson was fabulous. Used it twice on recommendation of nearby pharmacy. Stayed to dine in Dickson. Nice vibe.

We were in Canberra for a catch up with friends and a 21st. Highly recommend ‘Walt and Burley’ in Kingston for a relaxing place with a great atmosphere for a friends gathering. Great staff and the food was fantastic!
‘Bittersweet’ also in Kingston was another great food venue. Inspired by Nepalese cuisine and great staff.

The Ramada Diplomat staff were really accommodating and allowed an early check in which I really appreciated. My room was spacious, clean, comfortable and warm. Reception provided accurate walking directions for me to grab lunch in the day, and dinner and breakfast at the hotel restaurant was excellent. They also provided the invoice as requested for this work trip. Highly recommend to all visitors to Canberra, the location is also very convenient if travelling by train. Thank you Ramada Diplomat team.
The hotel is very central so everything we wanted to do was a short drive away.
The restaurant and the buffet breakfast ($28 per person each morning) had great food, service and ambience. The jungle setting is really nice.
The room was comfortable as well. We were very impressed with the fact that we were able to have a king and single bed in the room.
Value for money was really impressive as well. Price was low but the hotel wasn't cheap. We will stay here again if we visit Canberra again.
Great location next to the airport - just a short walk. Funky designed hotel - large rooms with spacious bathrooms. Meals were very good (not the cheapest) but worth the money. The breakfast had a lot of options and was very filling for a day of sightseeing in Canberra. Less than 10 mins in a cab into the CBD. Flight arrivals and departures board in the lobby area which was useful for our outbound flight, given there were numerous cancellations that morning
This hotel is in a very quiet spot and in an excellent location for visiting key sites and for accessing restaurants. The room was not large but was very comfortable. The staff are friendly and helpful. This was our second stay and would stay here again when in Canberra.
