I'm giving this location 10 stars because I feel like Europeans would find it so - it's a cultural thing as an American to expect different levels of comfort. However, I found our room to be rather cramped and the last room on the top floor, the furthest away from the lobby in what might have originally been the attic - the windows were dormered. The beds were spartan in that sleeping on them was like sleeping on stone. My hips began aching by the third day. The pillows were meager, half size. I had to ask twice before they brought us some extras but in the hotel's defense, my German is deplorable, so it's quite possible I couldn't make myself understood. The bathroom was pretty much the same as any hotel in the US, very small - the bathtub and shower felt like bathing in a coffin. I feel like many of these complaints wouldn't bother most Europeans: they're tougher than Americans are at this point. So I didn't really dock the hotel any points on my ratings for the uncomfortable aspects of the rooms. The breakfast was amazing, and my son and I really enjoyed it every morning. The hotel was perfectly located. We're not Christmas people, so when we booked we had thought the location would be rather empty but to our surprise it was Christmas Market and teeming with people. The parking situation was overly complicated and rather expensive in my mind (16 euros per day) but once again, American coming into a situation with expectations that are probably culturally inappropriate. The bar was nice and relatively affordable and Andreas the bartender was a highlight.

Wernigerode is a beautiful city, easy to get around as mainly flat. Wonderful medieval architecture, good shops, nice people, good restaurants,. There is a castle - currently having work done but that’s ok we’ve been before. Easy access to other gems like Quedlinburg and Goslar - we used the bus. The Harz National Park is great for exploring if you have your car too - and a trip on the steam train up to The Brocken is worth doing. Wernigerode has museums, churches, half timbered buildings and a castle!
Great Italian restaurant just off Breite Street.

A very pleasant town, with very many shops, cafes, hotels and restaurants. It is a 15 minute walk from the station, and if you are getting there by train after 8.30 you will probably struggle to get a taxi. We stayed at the Ringhotel Weisser Hirsch which was very pleasant, comfortable and central. Wiecker coffee house with fabulous cakes on the square is ok, but always very busy. There are equally good coffee shops in town with cakes that are just as good. There is a very good Italian restaurant almost next door to the Wiecker, but having said that there are always plenty of good Italian restaurants in Germany. The town is flat and streets are cobbled but pavements are good. A very good place to stay if you want to go on the Harz Mountain Railway. However, it is quite expensive, although good value for money, to do the return trip to Brocken, the highest peak, and it takes nearly two hours each way. Fortunately although the train carriages are old they do have good toilets on board

The castle is a must for the town.
The castle is a must for the town. The old town is also very good, especially around the market square. Old town does have some new mixed in, plus buildings in need of repair. We stayed both here and in Quedlinburg. Given this I would have taken more time in Quedlinburg.

Beautiful place…a hidden secret!
Beautiful place…a hidden secret! Buildings full of character, and new houses built in a similar style. It was clean and full of bars, restaurants, brass sculptures, wine bars and of course the castle and steam trains! We discovered the road train to get up to the castle which was great since you can’t park up there. Everyone was lovely and we walked miles just exploring cobbled streets. The fab weather was a bonus! The Wein Garten is well worth finding!

Wernigerode is a wonderful city!
Wernigerode is a wonderful city! While there, you feel like in a fairy tale. Wonderful half-timbered houses. A gorgeous castle, many other attractions we just did not manage to visit.
Just one thing! it is difficult to find a menu in English in a restaurant, and not every waiter speaks English. So, it may be a google translate quest, in case you do not speak German!

Close to the train station, as well as the old town, which we enjoyed very much. We were close to the steam train ride from Wernigerode to Brocken.
Breakfast at the hotel was very good and the staff did a great job of organising people.
The bed was not as comfortable as at many other hotels.
The dinner menu was OK and servings generous, so Senior meals should be chosen by those seniors who don't eat a lot.
Enjoyed my couple of days at Furtenhof Hotel. A clean and comfortable Hotel near the centre of Wernigerode with free parking. The breakfast buffet was sufficient with a varied choice of foods. Friendly helpful staff too.
Excellent location. We had a view of Wernigerode Rathus from our window. Very clean hotel, delicious food and very kind and helpful staff at the reception.
