I like Gatehouse of fleet, there is a lovely walk and Carstramon woods is stunning , however on a recent previous visit we were unable to get a jacket potato for my lunch in either of the cafes'. So we headed over to Kirkcudbright for lunch where we were looked after at lunch time. Some of the shops are lovely. I understand there are a couple of Very good hotels in town for overnight stays. Food was much better than last year, new chef, I think. I love the hotel and have stayed many times before. This time I was in a single room, but felt that the room needed an update, and the beds need upgrading as they are old. Gatehouse of Fleet is a nice, quiet little town and a good location from which to explore Dumfries and Galloway. It is a small town so everywhere is walkable. There is an excellent visitor centre with historical exhibition, cafe, bookshop and art gallery. We ate at 2 of the pubs, the Murray Arms and the Masonic Arms and both were good.
