Jedburgh has a number of good tourist "sites" - one of the best abbeys. The main sites in town are all within easy walking distance of each other - so if you book accommodation in the town centre you can ditch the car while sightseeing in town. It is also a great spot for day trips to other tourist sites in the Borders area - super easy drives to the other abbeys, castles, etc. Most are less than a half hour drive and can be strung together into great circle day tours. There are a number of good restaurants and cafes in the town, although be warned that after tourist season (we were there in mid-Oct) some of them close early. It has a large free car park, free toilets at the car park with the information office and bus station next door. Very interesting free entry to the castle gaol and Mary, Queen of Scots house. It has a ruined Abbey. The town is compact and has lots of cafes and interesting little shops including a chocolate shop. Jedburgh is a lovely town and we visited the Thistle & Tweed shop on the High Street which we cannot recommend highly enough. Lovely little market town where we normally just break our journey up to Aberdeen. It was nice to spend a little bit longer even though it's now the 'off season'. Really couldn't have asked for more for the price. The only problem - and this is on booking.com not the hotel - it's NOT IN JEDBURGH. It's in Denholm, which is more Hawick way. That really messed up my plans in terms of getting around the borders. Could have cost me a taxi fare or too. In other words, staying for a similar price in a travel lodge, for me relates to a stay in a city like London, and is clinical. A bed and a shower basic.
