This unique residence is a modern reworking of the Great Western Hotel, built in 1844 and reputed to be the oldest surviving railway hotel in the world.

We upgraded to a junior suite, which was a great size room. The room and floor were nice and quiet. Big bathroom with bath, shower and double sinks. Location of the hotel was ideal , very central and right by the station. Plenty of choice at breakfast.

Within Forbury Gardens, this luxury 5-star hotel offers a fine dining restaurant and a cocktail bar. Reading Rail Station is a 5-minute walk away.

Booked a larger room for the sofas evident in the photos, but mine only had the two small chairs and no extras. Paid 1.5x the cost of the room for this so was really disappointed. Also the room was super hot

The Abbey House Hotel is located a 10-minute walk to Reading town centre, in a quiet residential area. It offers free Wi-Fi and free parking to all guests.

I appreciated being given an upgraded room - it was basic but had everything I needed. Location was close to shops, restaurants and the local railway station so it was all walkable. On the downside, the internal sound insulation was poor so there was some noise from rooms downstairs. And the lighting in the room was very dim.

FAQs about hotels in Reading

Work and Play Beside the Thames

At the meeting point of the Thames and Kennet rivers, affluent Reading is close to London, yet far enough to feel completely different. For this reason it is an important business hub, particularly for IT. The M4 motorway runs directly from here to Heathrow Airport, and trains from its station terminate at Paddington.

The town has literary connections to Jane Austen – whose school was in the Abbey Gateway – and Oscar Wilde, who was imprisoned in its jail. Nowadays, the Reading Festival is its biggest cultural event and has earned a place in the town hall museum. However, its most impressive exhibit is a replica of the Bayeux Tapestry.

The Reading shopping options include Broad Street and The Oracle, a riverside complex also housing bars, cinemas and restaurants. The river continues south to one of the town’s green spaces, some housing golf courses. Forbury Gardens features a bandstand and large lion statue, and next door are ruins of an abbey founded by Henry I.

Potential day trips include the Roman remains at Silchester, and river cruises to Henley-on-Thames, while sport lovers should visit the Madejski Stadium, home of Reading FC and London Irish rugby club.

Booking.com’s Reading accommodation includes hotels with spas, cheap apartments and guest houses with parking.

I wanted to visit the Minster - for historical reasons - there's a Napoleonic memorial there - but it's not a car friendly city. It's easy to drive into bus lanes, and the one way system, with bus priority lanes and roads, make driving very difficult. Much of the enabling infrastructure wasn't working - lifts at the car park and station were out of order, and despite a lot of obvious investment, the city centre didn't work well for us. Our combined age is 158. Even the taxis get lost. I was born in this city, but I don't think that we will return any time soon.

For me Reading is too urban to be a chosen destination.

For me Reading is too urban to be a chosen destination. We visited in order to meet up with friends who were en route between USA and family in the north. Reading has a lot of ethnic restaurants which is a bonus. Lots of shops. There is a small but pleasant Rural Life Museum which is free to enter and has activiites for children. There are also old Abbey ruens. For us the best aspect of Reading is the Kennet footpath by the water and the beautiful Thames path which we stayed beside in the Crowne Plaza.

Like many towns, Reading ranges from affluent to grotty.

Like many towns, Reading ranges from affluent to grotty. The house is located off the Oxford Road which I know well having worked at both ends. The location is set well back from the Oxford Road and was very quiet. The house has been styled to impress. Not my cup of tea in many ways and overall was very good indeed. If you want to go for a walk at night. Having a bit of street savvy would be wise. If not car or taxi to any venue may be a good idea.

Reading is a great town with great amenities, there are some great shopping options at the Oracle shopping centre and some great places to eat. There is also two Weatherspoon's, which is great when you're away on business because the food is reasonable and its cheap.

The room is very spacious. The hotel's location is in the town centre and all the shops are right in front of you. The railway station is just behind the hotel (approx 5 mins walk) and several Reading bus service line stops are in front/near the hotel.
