A City Fit to Prosper

Yogyakarta represents the Javanese quintessence, the guardian of the island’s traditions, language, culture and arts. Capital of kingdoms and empires since the 8th century, ‘Yogya’ is today the capital of the namesake Sultanate and Special Region of Indonesia.

With ancient origins, the city was during centuries the capital of the Mataram Kingdom, but its power was weakened when the Dutch East India Company started to gain control over the small Javanese kingdoms during the 17th century. After World War II, the Indonesian independence was supported by the Sultan, allowing the monarchy to stay in power. The city became the country’s first capital from 1945 to 1949.

Its name was inspired by the Indian Ramayana epic, with ‘Yogya’ meaning 'suitable, fit’ and ‘karta’ meaning 'prosperous'. Must-see sites include the Kraton Yogyakarta Palace, the Taman Sari Castle, the Alun-Alun Sultan's ground, and the Masjid Gede Kauman Mosque. Jalan Malioboro street is one of the most popular shopping areas, and many hotels in Yogyakarta are located nearby.

Its proximity to the famous temples of Borobudur and Prambanan makes this town one of the country’s most popular destinations. Hotels, resorts and homestay accommodation are also available near those areas.

    Of course, the unmissable Borobodur Temple and the Prambanan Temple Complex were my favorite places to visit. I am a great admirer of ancient cultures, so both sites were a very positive experience, but of course the other ancient monuments as well. I eating in the hotel. I rented a motorbike, so it was very easy to visit the city's historical monuments or even the beach. I would like to visit even more memorial sites in this very nice city, where I met very friendly people.

    Charming destination with retro, laidback vibes and friendly people. History and heritage buffs will find prominent spots to explore while adventurous visitors can enjoy touring Mount Merapi or go karst tubing. Shopping enthusiasts can find lovely batik, handicrafts and food gifts at reasonable prices too. Should try riding around in the motorised trishaw or a horse drawn carriage - unique experience!

    Yogya is a beautiful city from a cultural perspective and has grown in sophistication over the years. All the people are friendly and helpful. Weather was a bit cooler than Jakarta, which is a good thing.

    Prambanan Temple was amazing!

    Prambanan Temple was amazing! We went there though it's raining heavily but the view during rain was as spectacular as ever. We had so much delicious food, from ayam penyet to soto to bakso and gudeg! It was all too satisfying! SInce we had a supir to get around the city in a car, travelling by foot might be a little challenging as some landmarks are quite far. We enjoyed so much of jeep riding to Pantai Timang, Gunung Merapi, Gumuk Pasir. But we didn't manage to go Borobodur due to the weather and also timing. But overall i think it's a very amazing fun trip for sure!

    Yogyakarta is a vibrant city, the most important of the whole island for its cultural wonders. Borobudur, Prambanan, Sonobudoyo Museum, Kraton palace, traditional Javanese gamelam music, danses and wayang puppet or human performances based on Ramayana and Mahabharata Stories! It was my second time there and I would like to come back again ... Strongly recommend to go and to stay at least one week!

    It's an absolute must for people visiting Indonesia. The temples, Borobudur and Prambanan, are world class attractions. The new airport is top notch. The Sultan's Palace is interesting. The rest of Yogyakarta does not stand out.

    Very nice scenery in this hotel! Gives you the vibe of the old colonial times. The staff of the hotel is extremely friendly and helpful and really made the difference for our stay!
