We chose the Ellison at the last minute, as I had taken the day off to attend my graduation ceremony, and we decided to take the train to Castlebar. From the very beginning, the hotel exceeded our expectations with their exceptional care and thoughtfulness. Before our arrival, they proactively called to advise on safe driving due to adverse weather conditions caused by Storm Bert, and they reassured us with flexible check-in options in case of any delays.
When we arrived, we were greeted by a magical sight, the landscape was completely covered in snow, creating a winter wonderland that took our breath away.
The next morning, we were delighted by the generous breakfast spread, which offered a wide variety of sweet and savoury options to suit every taste. The hotel was bustling with students and their families gathered for the local university’s graduation ceremony, filling the hall with a lively and festive atmosphere.
What truly sets the Ellison apart is the warmth and friendliness of its staff. Their genuine hospitality made our stay even more special, and we are so grateful for the wonderful experience. Thank you for making such an important occasion even more unforgettable!
With a swimming pool and gym, the historic Breaffy House Resort is located in 101 acres of woodland estate. Located just outside Castlebar, it is less than 5 minutes’ drive from the town center.

We stayed for a family function, other family living in the area. I’ve stayed a many hotels worldwide and this ranks up among the best of them, their staff being the best. Mairead you are a superstar!
What a beautiful setting, absolutely stunning views both inside and out.
Magnificent food, all of our party agreed-as did our local family members. The afternoon tea was absolutely superb.
We all loved the pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. My husband tried out the gym, which he said was good, but none of us had any time for spa treatments.
For those who felt their rooms were too warm-all you need to do is open the windows and the temperature is perfect.
I cannot say enough good about the staff-they really make the place the best. Every staff member we interacted with was most friendly, welcoming and helpful.
We will be back!

The genuinely warm welcome - all facilities spotlessly clean - comfortable bed - excellent cooked breakfast - to cap it all my host drove me 7km to my first call of the day for which I am most grateful.

The hosts were friendly and welcoming. Each morning they helped guests find the best routes to the places they planned to visit that day. They had a detailed map book that they used, which was great because the roads in Castlebar are confusing. The room was comfortable and breakfast was delicious.
On the previous page, booking gave them a rating of 3/5. I disagree and think it should be higher.
I would definitely stay at Carrick House again and recommend it to friends.

I liked the Theatre show I went to was enjoyable. Loved the shops around the hotel not too far to walk. Hotel was nice but few things could be updated for price of rooms. Ate in hotel but I would definitely look for other places to eat if I was going back to Castlebar.

Layout of the town is terrible.
Layout of the town is terrible. Very difficult to find things and drive in for someone who is not familiar with it. Restaurants are adequate; a good variety. Mostly need to be there because of services (solicitor, accountant, etc.). My understanding is that the hospital is not very good.

We as a family spent a long weekend in Castlebar.
We as a family spent a long weekend in Castlebar. A car is not required to get around town. There are many lovely cafes for lunch and we had dinner at Pizza Bros which was very reasonably priced and food was delicious. There are many other lovely restaurants to choose from. The Irish Bar looked great for lunch but due to it's popularity we didn't get to try it. Another great pub - John McHales. Went there on Sunday night and they had live music playing - great atmosphere. We found an Escape Room Experience called INSiDE which is about a 15 minute walk from the centre of town - highly recommend it... we really enjoyed it. We also went bowling and then hired a car and went to Westport for a day. We ate at The Towers Bar & Restaurant. Food was amazing.. We drove along the coast to Bertra Beach with amazing scenery along the way. Could have done with a few more days - great weekend

Friendly host. Lovely welcome. Spacious clean bedroom and en suite, kettle, tea/ coffee in room which was most welcome. Breakfast is great, cereal, fruit, yogurts, orange, apple and cranberry juice, full Irish fry tea/coffee and toast.
