Overlooking the tranquil waters of Lough Leane, colourful Killarney is a top Irish tourist destination. The UNESCO-listed Killarney National Park surrounds Muckross House, a stately home sitting in large grounds with a traditional farm.
A tree-lined lane leads to Muckross Abbey, a former Franciscan monastery whose cloisters enclose a tall yew tree. Celtic crosses line the cemetery and beyond is the lake, at the centre of which is a tree-lined outcrop, home of the historic Ross Castle. This 15th-century stone fortress once housed the O’Donoghue clan, one of whom reportedly lives at the bottom of the lough.
More legends envelop the Ring of Kerry – a scenic drive starting from Killarney and supposedly the last place to spot a leprechaun. Gushing Torc waterfall is just one of its fantastic sights.
In Killarney itself, horse-drawn carts roam narrow streets whose Irish pubs offer great nightlife. Impressive St Mary’s Cathedral has a towering spire and somewhat dark interior. The local gaelic football team play at Fitzgerald Stadium, and more sports can be enjoyed at Killarney riding stables and the nearby golf and fishing club. There is also a popular racecourse.
Accommodation in Killarney on Booking.com includes 5-star lakeside hotels, B&Bs near the train station and town centre guest houses. All with that trademark Irish hospitality.
Killarney is the most wonderful place. The scenery is spectacular and breathtaking. Definitely need a car for the best experience. Killarney town is a tourism town and they know how to do that very well. Traffic and congestion is a bit of an issue but that is because of its popularity. Recommend the Gap of Dunloe drive, Muckross house and national park, Ross castle, and to drive the ring of Kerry. Portmagee,Valentia Island, Dingle a must.

Downtown had too much traffic, but once on road to Ring of Kerry it was lovely. Ross Castle was ok. Didn't do inside tour (overpriced).
Muckross House and grounds are very nice. Lots of hiking paths. Hiked waterfall trail. Well maintained gravel trails with good signs.. Disappointed red trail was closed. Not sure why no closed signs at trailhead. (Signs were at halfway point).
Food at Muckross Hotel and Spa (i.e., Coggins) was very good. Highly recommend. Manager (Shane) and staff were very friendly with the Irish cheer. Manager was so nice to my wife and I the first dinner that we went back a 2nd night. Food was very good with large portions.

Very nice town, not too busy on weekdays.
Very nice town, not too busy on weekdays. Lots of cafes to choose from. Killarney house in Centre. 2.5km walk to Ross Castle and the lake. You can take the scenic walk starting near St. Mary’s Cathedral. Muckross house is about 5km away. Plenty of beautiful views of the lakes and the mountains. Many parking spaces available. If you need a taxi you can get one in the centre.

The town is quaint and quiet.
The town is quaint and quiet. I arrived too late for the 14 December parade. The HOHO bus just takes you to sites in the free national Park. No other buses go down that way. It's walkable just long (I know because I walked down to muck Ross house and back). You need to book ahead to see Ross castle but it's just a museum in a modern remodel so nothing like the ruin I expected. Great national Park for "hiking". Tour bus driver bragged about hiking them all, but I have hiked Mt Rainier so I was not impressed. Ireland national Park is a lot like Acadia in maine. Tours on the ring of Kerry stop at locations I would skip. And like most bus tours the stops are probably connected to some commercial benefit. The Quills store in sneem is not a scam. Same price as the one in Killarney except Sneem has general Irish souvenirs too making it a convenient place to shop. Not really sure what the hype is all about.

Situated in a fantastic location, it provides stunning views outside and is just off the Ring of Kerry road and only a short 10-minute drive from Killarney town centre. Family room was spacious, two separate bedrooms worked great for us. Gluten free and dairy free options were available for breakfast. There was a swimming pool and jacuzzi in the hotel. Location very handy we were able to get to thw ring of kerry no problem, close enough to town centre without being too loud
A really top quality, well situated, hotel about 15 min walk into the town centre. We received a very warm welcome from the staff/owner and the service at breakfast was exceptional.
