I cannot even imagine why someone would give this less than ten other than they were expecting a sterile hotel. This place has more character and historical beauty than any place I’ve been in Japan, and I’ve been all over. It IS NOT a hotel, a cushy spa on Hakkone, anything generic. It IS. A totally singular unlike any place you’ve been before historical, proud, quirky, creaky, beautiful, mysterious place. We were the only people there the first night and I felt like I had crossed the bridge in “spirited away.” There are tunnels and pathways within the building and we had spectacular views, and the beautiful baths alone with whispering bamboo and total silence. But most of the service is out of this world. I’ve been to many ryokans? And the level of care and proud hospitality, and sweet lovely smiles AND THE FOOD. The most delicious, generous, indigenous, creative…you can’t believe it. I could go on and on but am almost out of room. If you are a Hyatt person, or a White Lotus spa type- don’t go here. Let’s keep it for me. But if you want a secret slice of real Japan with the best hospitality and food in the world with things you’ll never find anywhere else - this is your place

Very clean, simple Japanese inn - good location in small hot spring village with wonderful hot spring baths indoor and outdoor. Superior room was very spacious. Good kaiseki dinner , substantial japanese breakfasts. Very much off the beaten tourist track - almost exclusively Japanese.

Even before we arrived, communication was so helpful. Our room was beautiful and spacious. We were attended to perfectly throughout our stay by Hoshino who spoke excellent English, was so well-organized and absolutely charming. He even accompanied us back to the train station to be sure we got our departure tickets.
Offering mountain views, Smooth & Living in Ueda features accommodations and a garden.

Very quiet and secluded place with a café and rest area on the first floor. Was very clean. The Quad room is actually a quad room, and not a dormitory so I didn't have to share it with others even though i booked it for a single person.

Bit of a hike up a fairly a steep hill (15-20 minutes), glad we are light packers! Beautiful entry and welcoming staff. No one speaks English very well, but they try really hard to make one comfortable. Good clean, very hot water in Onsen. Quiet, with few people in the water.
Excellent multi-course traditional Japanese food were served for breakfast and dinner (called "half board"). A short walk to the very small village. Surrounded by good collection of other places to eat. Liquor store across the street. Went hiking to the numerous and beautiful temples and shrines nearby.
