The lodge is in a beautiful location although arriving was awkward. I did not feel that the staff I interacted with was trained in hospitality or in a service mentality. I overshot the Minobu station and had to get off two stops afterwards so I called the inn to ask how best to get back. The person who answered didn’t understand me and even when I had a Japanese person tell them where I was they said they had no idea where I was and hung up. I then tried to get a cab to take me there but he had never heard of Kukurinbo. However I asked if he could take me back to Minobu Station and he said yes, then called his friends taxi in Minobu who took me to the inn. It took about a half hour and was quite an expensive trip. Given that the majority of guests during my stay were non Japanese it would be useful to have staff who spoke a little bit of English.
When I arrived there was a mixup with my reservation even though I had communicated with them beforehand that I was a single person and would require meals, they had me listed as two people and no meals. By this time I was exhausted and just wanted to lie down but the front desk person kept going back to an office and discussing the matter at length with her colleagues, although had time to check in another guest while I waited. I finally just asked if I could go to my room because I had traveled all day and would like to rest while they figured things out.
This was just the beginning of a series of interactions which I won’t go into but they clearly thought my room was bigger than I needed. My orientation to the inn and the shared bathrooms etc was a series of “don’ts” and I never felt very welcome or comfortable. The rooms have no locks, and no central heating, and I had to figure out the heat on my own although she told me about the AC which I learned on my own did not blow hot air, only cold air (as far as I knew). Meals were only served at one time.

We are very grateful for the willingness and authenticity of Ken, the host priest, who made our experience there, not only comfortable and pleasant but also enriching by teaching us with the best of intentions something about his Buddhist practice, the temples, and their traditions. Truly moving!

As a Yuru Camp fan, one night near Lake Motosu or here at Koan is something you must do. Both dinner and breakfast were really good and a lot of food was provided. You can choose between JAP or AME breakfast. They have a lot of Yuru Camp merch, and got one room with a kotatsu attached to it, so the experience was awesome.
Get to Lake Motosuko stop, and make sure to take their offer to give you a ride as Koan is really far from the closest bus station. They were kind enough to offer shuttle service with their own car, to and from Koan

This is a very dated hotel in the middle of nowhere (close to Mt. Fuji, but nothing else nearby). We stayed in a huge room with 2 bedrooms so it was spacious, but very dated. Thereʻs a golf course nearby so it would be great for a group of golfers. We had the half-board option and the food was good, but not spectacular.

This stay was the highlight of our weeklong romantic trip.
This stay was the highlight of our weeklong romantic trip. The chief priest assigned to us,”Ken”, was exceptionally kind, informative and helpful as was his wife. Both were remarkably gracious hosts. The temple compound and tour was truly remarkable. Highly recommended.
