Enjoyed staying here during our visit to takachiho gorge - very very clean and comfortable rooms - walkable to the gorge (although the return walk is mostly up some steep inclines). Rooms are small - but still worked for our family of 5! Enjoyed the breakfast buffet, which had both western and Japanese options. Would definitely stay here again for a future visit!

The location is just right next to the entrance to the Gorge. A spacious house with twin bed and tatami bed. There are sufficient heaters in the rooms and halls to heat up the premise quickly if the weather is cold. The place is so peaceful and quiet with great view.
Opened in April 2014 after a thorough renovation, this ryokan features spacious guest rooms surrounded by tranquil mountains.

Loved this accomodation private onsen and sauna were a treat. Dinner and breakfast were traditional Japanese and delicious. Were able to purchase wine on property which was reasonably priced and locally made. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Great place to stay

The house was big , clean, and comfortable. Before we entered the house, the host warmed up the house before we arrived. 2 shower, 1 bath room & 2 toilets was perfect for 8 persons, not easy to find when you have a big group. A place to hang your laundry. Many entering decorations.

Everything at this ryokan exceeds my expectation. Their service is extremely professional. Their attention to details are noticeable. They are the best among all the ryokans we have stayed so far.

Accomodation was a beautiful log cabin in the Miyazaki countryside! The facilities were clean and modern, and the bed was so comfortable!! There were so many thoughtful touches, like having spare pairs of crocs outside the cabin, having salt and cooking oil in the kitchen, having tea and coffee sachets. You can also park directly in front of your cabin which is very convenient.
We reserved the course dinner offered by the host and it was delicious!! The host was also the chef (and the bartender) and we had a great time chatting to him in English and Japanese about the locally sourced ingredients and his very well-stocked bar. Thanks for such a lovely night Keita!!
Next time we will need to stay even longer, so we can use the fireplace and enjoy more of the peaceful countryside.
We had a wonderful stay, highly recommend El Campo.

We first visited Takachiho 14 years ago during March and decided to go back during a different season in October .The town has grown in size with a plush hotel and a local supermarket and getting around ismuch more easier . The only thing we would change would probably be the fun we had with the language barrier on our first visit . The Gorge is the main stay to the trip and we had the same reaction as last time that it blew us away again

Takachiho is about 1 hrs. 20 minutes drive from Kumamoto Airport and is easy to reach in a rental car. The scenery en route is amazing! The Gorge is stunning but not very long. The rowing boat trip is relatively expensive, ¥5100 for 30 minutes for a max of 3 people, but it is great fun with wonderful photo opportunities! You can walk some of the way along the river but part of the path is still damaged. There are several nice shrines in the area, one of which does nightly Kagura dance performances (1 hour for ¥1000). We stayed 2 nights in a lovely Ryokan at the end of our holiday and it was a great way to finiour trip to Japan.

Takachiho is an absolutely beautiful place!
Takachiho is an absolutely beautiful place! The gorge was one of the most incredible places I have ever been in my life and I will definitely be returning one day with my family. I cannot recommend this place enough.
The locals were so friendly! Literally everyone I spoke to was so kind and helpful, when I panicked and got myself lost they were so wonderful. Even kids walking home from school said hi as they passed me!
The only catch is that if you’re flying into Kumamoto Airport, there is only one bus that will take you to Takachiho and it’s over two hours to travel and only comes twice a day. You have to be very organised because if you miss that bus, it’s not easy to get there if you aren’t renting a car.
While you’re in the area, you should also check out Iwato Shrine and the Amaterasu Railway. The railway is a great way to get a better view of the valley from above -so long as you have a head for heights!
Overall, I would say seeing Takachiho is a must if you’re visiting Japan!

Beautiful establishment. The staff were very kind. We arrived late to the hotel but they made sure we were on time for the theater performance down the road. Every detail about the hotel was perfect, from the moment you arrived to the departure. They did not offer a Western style breakfast, which was the only downside of our experience there. It has a very local vibe to it.
It was a great location, not far from Takachiho Gorge. Staff was great. And the room was very clean. We spent one night there and were grateful to do so. That said, we are glad it was only one night. It is very reasonable cost wise. Were we younger and a bit more agile our review might have been very different. I would recommend this sweet low key place to anyone.
Basic tatami room in a guesthouse in Takachiho. The location is convenient with the bus station within 2 minutes' walk, though restaurants, cafes and sights are further. The facilities are clean and suitable for a short stay.
