The location was handy for funky local places to eat and drink. A fabulous walk up past the nearby temple and around the mountain rim through forest was a find. We enjoyed the Sakura festival parade.

The owner was incredibly helpful and friendly. She gave us a booklet with recommendations of where to eat and a hand drawn map of what to go see. She also helped us make a dinner reservation as many restaurants were already full. The bakery downstairs had a great selection of sweet and savoury goods. The station is only a few minutes walk away. We enjoyed our stay and regretted only staying one night. We hope to come back one pday.

Located just 45 km from Resonac Dome Oita, 体験型農家民泊「お陽さまと風」 offers accommodation in Makiguchi with access to a garden, a shared lounge, as well as a shared kitchen.

Mariko is an amazing host, very friendly, showed us around their farm and introduced us to their farming way of life. We chose to have dinner and breakfast and the food is very meticulous, healthy, delicious, and made with fresh ingredients. We also participated in harvesting shiitake mushrooms which was fun. We definitely recommend this place and would come again. Another very unexpected part of our stay is the tremendously beautiful scenic spots in Bungo-ono. Mariko introduced us to Todoro Bridge, Taizako Canyon, Harajiri Falls, and Fukoji Temple Buddha. There were no crowds and we were almost the only visitors. It was a phenomenal trip.

Situated in Niida, 43 km from Resonac Dome Oita, Kur Park Nagayu features accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a terrace and a restaurant.

The rooms are amazing little cabins that are cozy warm in the winter and very well designed. The bath is deep and allows you to feel like you are bathing in nature. The food in the restaurant was incredible. They adapted the menu for me to vegetate it was among the best meals I’ve had in Japan. The onsen is awesome too with warm baths that look out over the river. Magical! The fact they have a mixed section is great. Swimming costumes provided.

Boasting an open-air hot spring bath looking out to the Kuju nature, Kuju Kogen Cottage offers cosy accommodation located in the beautiful plateau. It comes with a souvenir shop and karaoke...

The absolute highlight of this property was the food and staff! We stayed for 2 nights and had breakfast and dinner each morning and night. Breakfast is standard continental breakfast with a good selection of Japanese dishes, but dinner shined! 1st night we had a 14 course Japanese set dinner, ryokan style, then we had wagyu beef charcoal BBQ on the 2nd night. Amazing quality! The staff are the most responsive I have ever interacted with, they always replied with a couple of hours to anything I asked them. There is are 2 onsite onsens; 1 public that's included as part of your stay, and 1 private that requires booking and an additional charge. The private onsen is suited for families, as the public onsen is divided by gender, as is typical for onsens.

We had an amazing stay at this Japanese guesthouse! The house is exquisitely beautiful, with modern furniture that blends style and comfort seamlessly. The rich collections on display added a unique charm and cultural touch to the place. The surrounding countryside scenery was simply breathtaking and made our stay even more relaxing. The host was also very kind and helpful. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a peaceful and memorable getaway.

We used Taketa as a base for day hikes so didn’t explore the town much. The main town is compact and quaint with narrow little streets and a bit of a sleepy feel. To be fair, this was a Monday evening and not much was happening. Had one of the best meals in Japan there at a little French fusion restaurant called Champi (a break from Japanese). Amazing food (5-6 little courses), lovely owner/chef and very reasonable cost. Also plenty of wine options. Also used the public onsen - well maintained and old-school. I recommend it.
