Historic and spiritual richness is a gift to the traveller - and Anuradhapura has both. We visited the magnificent stupa and Bodhi tree as well as archaeological sites. Awe inspiring stupas at the UNESCO site. Food was provided at our accommodation (Prestiva Stay) which was excellent. Ate typical Sri Lankan meals and enjoyed every mouthful. Lots of great history. We did a taxi tour with Gagan (via "less taxi private limited). He was a historian by backgroud. Sacred city with amazing archeological finds and the oldest live tree in the world, estimated to be over 2,500 years old. A little is known about the architectural philosophy of the ancient Hela ( Sinhala/Sri Lankan) King's, which placed the palace at the center and surrounded it with Dagabas and Monasteries (Ruwnaweli Maha Seya, Mirisawetiya, Abhayagiriya, Jethawanaramaya, Isurumuniya, and most recently, Sanda Hiru Saya to commemorate the 2009 end of LTTE war) in a circular immediate periphery. Next came Botanical Gardens (eg. Mahamwna Uyana), then lakes at the edge before agricultural lands (paddy fields). The open restaurant serves excellent Sri Lankan food, plus Thai dishes, which are made to order (so not super quick to appear). The pool is very pleasant, with a waterwall and some shading, the rooms large and with views of rice paddies, the beds comfortable and the AC efficient and quiet. Staff are friendly.
