Shamii, Erangia and the team were wonderful! Super helpful and friendly with a cheery good morning. We booked for three days and ended up staying for eighteen! The location is along a lovely residential lane with the hotel tucked in at the end on the beach. It has a beautiful outside bar serving great food and there is also a rooftop restaurant (which we didn't try). Also, the rooms have air conditioning and fridge and there is a private terrace seating looking out to sea. We'll definitely be coming back!!

We were a bit dubious when booking this hotel, due to the low price, but it far exceeded our expectations! Some building work going on at the front meant you walked through the carpark to Reception, which was a bit odd. Noise from construction didn't disturb us at all. The room was fresh, clean with good ac, shower, kettle, tv and comfy bed. Big shout out to the member of staff who looked out for us at breakfast. Don't think they had many Westerners staying, so breakfast was 'interesting!'  If you're looking for a place to stay to do the Crocodile Safari, it's perfect, just a short walk. We actually saw a 5m Crocodile on our boat ride, in the river, opposite the hotel!! 🐊

We really liked the accommodation. It's right on the beach with private sun loungers and parasols - that was the deciding factor for us when booking. The complex is very clean, the staff is very friendly and you feel very comfortable. The pool is also clean and the water is pleasant. The sea is a bit stormier but you can go in easily. We were very happy with the room, it was a great size, clean and the balcony with sea view was perfect for relaxing. The shower had great water pressure and the size of the bathroom was adequate. The breakfast was very extensive and definitely too much for us (less could be offered here).

We had the most incredible time at Shades, what a treat it was! It’s tucked away in a quiet spot amongst all the incredible nature. I’ve seen so much wild life during my stay there is no need to go for a safari tour. Waking up in the morning to the sounds of the jungle, starting my day with a swim in a beautiful huge pool and a delicious breakfast by the amazing team. Hospitality is outstanding, your every need is anticipated! Food was incredible, great variety and very balanced flavours. Room was so comfortable, I had the best sleep and a phenomenal view. Location was also great, all the beaches are so easily accessible and I enjoyed being away from all the hassle and busyness of the town, returning to this peaceful sanctuary after exploring around. Can’t wait to be back, thank you team!

    Best place to stay in Madiha. Perfect hospitality, quiet, confortable room directly on the beach. The food is excellent nothing to say. We had a great moment and extended our time there. We strongly recommend!!

    Polhena

    Polhena If you are looking for a tourist only beach, this isn't it. Mostly locals and that's why it was so lovely. Very small beach with no waves. A dead reef but some fish and turtles. Local people there were really kind. Which is what made this place special. The area itself was a bit of a tourist trap but the beach was actually was a small and cute meeting point.

    Matare is part of a chain of cities along the southernmost coast of Sri Lanka. It has beaches for expert surfers as well as beginners and those who just want to be by the beach. The beaches along the coast are all sparkling translucent and enticing. Find hotels along the shore because the traffic on the roads is dense and sometimes unpleasant to westerners the beaches and the kindness of the population more than make up for it.

    Nice place, but you have to make an effort to explore, which is nice. Not the commercial fully packaged commercial tourist deal. Good quirky options. Has quite a lot of Sri Lanka's history, forts, but courts, and old paved streets, as I said, a great if you make a little effort to explore. The Duchman's Street is a great beachside restaurant!

    Nature. Natural food. Luckily, not too many tourists yet, and it is not too crowded like in other parts of the island (e.g., in Merissa.)Avoid Matara city itself - it's crowded. Look for places nearby, where Google View shows more green color.

    Polhena beach is an excellent place to have a safe swim for...

    Polhena beach is an excellent place to have a safe swim for a traveller and can see turtles in the sea if you are lucky enough. And can visit Matara light house and Kudawalla water air hole by travelling a bit from Matara which has another nice beach.

    Polhena is a nice village, Matara is a nice city with friendly people. There is lots to do in this area. For example guided snorkling at Polhena Beach where you can really swim with the turtles, a boattrip on the Nilwala Ganga where you can see crocodiles. Or visit the Starfort. A great restaurant in Matara city is Dutchmanstreet restaurant. In Polhena i recommend eating at Sunil Rest, Blue Corals or Reef Edge restaurant. Walking around at night in Polhena... take a stick and flash light with you, the street dogs just had puppys (cute) but their mother instinct gave me the creeps.

    The location is perfect, its clean and quiet. The hotel itself has the most beautifully maintained garden, very serene and clean. The rooms are very clean with strong aircon. The beach is a few steps away . The staff are exceptionally friendly. We felt fully refreshed after our stay here and wish we could have stayed longer. If you're looking for somewhere calm, beautiful and easy access to other beaches to explore this is a great spot.
