Essaouira has developed from a hippie hangout to become a top Morocco beach resort with good surfing conditions. Its 18th-century medina is almost European in feel and narrow streets lead under low arches past fragrant spice stalls and local artisans selling everything from wood carvings to faience pottery.
Dotted around the souk are many traditional-style riads on Booking.com, hidden behind tiled façades and blue doors. Other Essaouira accommodation options include luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap apartments, and B&Bs near Essaouira Airport.
Also bright blue are the rowing boats bobbing gently in small harbours sheltered by the Scala of the Port, a wide walkway with ramparts through which several historic cannons poke out. At the end is the Citadel, a small fortress overlooking Mogador Island - the largest of the Iles Purpuraires, so-called for the purple shells found in their rocks that were once used to produce dyes for Roman senator togas.
Another fortress – Bordj El Berod – lies in pieces on the long, sandy beach south of the marina. In the opposite direction the coastline is more rocky and lined by the Scala of the Kasbah, the crenellated walls protecting the medina. Horseriding and camel safaris are available on the beach and you can also visit a Berber village inland.

Essaouira is a magical coastal town, with a well preserved Médina which is well geared up to support tourists without being over the top. It retains its original charm and has a myriad of fine restaurants… ke cle de voutee being one of the finer restaurants… monkfish with a creamy saffron sauce! We ate their twice, and a very good choice of local wines.

I travelled from Marrakech to spend one night in Essaouira and take in the sea air. I stayed in the old town and thoroughly enjoyed myself with the medina and the sea combined. It is a bit softer than Marrakech which can be quite intense and the people more forceful, so it was a nice change. Streets are much more dirty than Marrakech (the vendors there clean regularly their space during the day and evening) Lots of food on the streets of Essaouira but it wouldn't put me off visiting again.

Essaouira is special.
Essaouira is special. The locals are kind and welcoming and the pace of life much calmer than Marrakech. If you’re looking for a beer drenched, party atmosphere with loads of venues for British revellers - this won’t be for you; however if you’re looking to experience a different culture, its local arts and crafts and strong sense of community identity, along side delicious local healthy food (with plenty of vegetarian options), as well as sun, sea and surfing in February, then come and enjoy Essaouira.
NB:Those allergic to cats need not apply as there is a huge cat population.
We definitely hope to return one day.

Second time we have visited, this time with our daughter. Great setting, long sandy beach, castle walls, fab rooftop restaurants, great music and art scene. Relaxed, hippy vibe and stunning sunsets. Fish market/eaterie on front by port is just wonderful - choose your fresh fish and have it cooked in front of you. Great escape from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech - souks much more chilled, cleaner and no haggling or harassing. Just lovely.

Low key coastal town with a brilliant beach and lots of arty places, eateries and cafes. Three days was enough for me - I did some yoga, some beach walks, lots of coffees & reading - as there isn’t much to explore, nor is it a lie all day on the beach type of place (maybe it would be in spring / summer - for now it was lovely for walks and a paddle. Felt totally safe as a solo woman.

We have been travelling around Morocco staying in top hotels and there is anything like this hotel. It is a true temple for relax in the middle of paradise. Beautiful architecture decorated with the best taste. The swimming pool is perfect and the beach is amazing with a calm sea surrounded by beautiful dunes. Great hospitality from the staff and loads of activities to do during your stay. While you are in the hotel, the rest of the world disappears. We will definitely come back.
They were doing renovations when I was there and I was very sceptical however it made absolutely no difference to the stay apart from accessing the outdoor pool which would be too cold anyway at that time of year the bedrooms offered in as alternative were looking onto the sea and was superbthe staff were amazing and was in the café overlooking the beach and see which was really really excellent. I strongly recommend staying at this hotel. I have stayed here many times before.
The hotel and the staff are really nice. Beds are super comfy and there's plenty of hot water. Also, the breakfast is delicious. They gave us recommendation for a nice restaurant as well and from there, you can easily walk to the port, the beach or around medina.
