A quiet, tradition Mexican town, full of surprises, little coffee or chocolate shops, small bakeries, great restaurants as well as local delicacies. Its a place to enjoy walking, discovering its roots and aura.
It is the perfect spot to explore other great towns around, like Santa Clara del Cobre, a town completely dedicated to make cooper crafts, Quiroga, the shopping center for everything Michoacan, the whole region has to offer, Tzintzunzan, a blend of pre-colombian archeological sites, one of the first monasteries built by the Franciscan monks, and a modern town, offering a myriad of clay and straw craftsmanship. The more you venture into the region, the richier your experience, a place to be enjoyed many times over.

Beautiful colonial style town.
Beautiful colonial style town. Located centrally to other craft towns nearby (Santa Clara de Cobre.. copper Town; Ztinzunzen, baskets, green pottery and large stone work and pottery; Capula, catrina figures, clay and other pottery.
Center for Dia de los Muertos celebration at beginning of November is stellar if you visit at that time, however, prices are higher for accommodations and must be booked far in advance. Other times of the year easy to book.

This town is at 2140 meters elevation and is very cold in the evenings going as low a 4c. You need to make sure there are doors to shut out the cold, hot water and plug in heaters that will not blow the circuits. Our accomodationon on booking said that because the ad did not say anything about heating that they were not obligated to supply it. Make sure that the living space has doors installed so that the cold air can't enter anywhere if it is an apartment. Ie no open air kitchen or living room with just doors to bedrooms.

This town is so charming! Very laid-back and tranquil.
This town is so charming! Very laid-back and tranquil. (We were not visiting during the Dia de Muertos celebrations.) The central plaza is really beautiful, well utilized by the people and yet still felt low-key. The architecture is pleasing to the eye. I also love that you can see the mountains and countryside in the distance. Unlike a lot of colonial cities (I live in one), Patzcuaro does not feel closed in because the buildings are almost all no taller than two levels. I can't wait to go back!

Lovely historic building, nice staff, wonderful view from upstairs dining room. So happy the building has been kept close to its original state - wood floors, very high ceilings with wood beams. Very nice terraza/courtyard. Recommend rooms just off the courtyard. Perfect location across from Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Salud. Have stayed here in the 80s, 90s, & 2000s. This time brought two grandchildren, ages 12 & 15. We all loved out stay there.
The hotel is beautifully located at the top of the mountain with a view of the lake and the islands. Staff were super friendly and there were two lovely cats.
