We were surprised that Ashburton had the variety of shops, with the normal nationwide big box type outlets, but to my wife's delight was also well served by boutique local outlets, that seemed to be well supported by the locals. Ashburton is roughly half way between the top and bottom of the South Island, so is a good place to stay if you are driving between the top and bottom of the South Island. Love Ashburton. A wonderful place to visit. Go to the Library, get a Latte from the Cafe there, and a Cheese Roll, go to the Art Gallery, Domain Park, Retro stores, local shops, Antique Store and amazinf clothing stores, Basilica, Coronation Park Accomodation was wonderful, all the locals were lovely, Street Art! We liked the convenience of having a cabin where we didn't need to bring anything. The pond was really lovely and we enjoyed feeding the ducks (poohs were a bit smelly and sticky though) and playing on the playground. It was a long way out of town though.
