Featuring a garden and views of garden, Greenstone Retreat is a guest house situated in a historic building in Kumara, 25 km from Greymouth Railway Station.

The welcome, even though I had not met the proprietor in person. The home felt and smelt like walking into a wairua space, so immediately we felt relaxed. We three wahine work long hours and came to the coast to work some hours more. To return to a whare that was warm, connected to a community of other travelers within the Kumara township of the West Coast was a privilege. Thank you.

Located on the outskirts of Greymouth, Paroa Hotel offers comfortable accommodation with free Wi-Fi and enchanting seaside views. It is 10 minutes' walk from South Beach.

From our arrival we encountered nothing but friendly and helpful staff; the room was incredibly spacious, the bed was super comfortable; we enjoyed a meal in the onsite restaurant, so warm with a fire going; the meal was delicious and a generous serving; great location...hope to come back one day!

The word "Retreat" in the title gave me the expectation of luxurious accomodation with fully contained rooms, spas etc. None of that, which was disappointing. A small private holiday park would cover it better.

We had a larger group of 4 families of different sizes, the villa and cabin options fitted with our agenda and stay perfectly. We did a lot of driving and exploring during the day and cooked at home / played games in the evening. It was a lot of fun.

it was a good location for sightseeing further around the area and for exploring on foot or bike. Be aware of the insects though and make sure you have repellent with you. The 'town' itself is very quiet. I would strongly recommend staying at the Hotel Theatre Royal. Clean, comfortable, interesting, great staff and good food.

We came to Kumara specifically to stay at the Greenstone Retreat.....travelling the South Island, on the list was Fish n Chips on the Beach by the famous 'Hokitika' Sign to watch the sunset!!! We did this, and Kumara was just a skip away to stay.

Close to the West Coast Wilderness Cycle Trail, Kumara...

Close to the West Coast Wilderness Cycle Trail, Kumara Historic Cottage is a backpackers with basic yet comfortable accommodation that fits the cost which was very reasonable. Comfortable beds and the living room was OK for four of us - would be cramped with a full quota of guests. Kitchen basic. No separate toilet. If you want less basic accommodation, the pub has rooms available. Main grizzle was the lack of TV channels available - one channel (Prime) is no choice and when it is pouring outside there is very little to do in Kumara! On the bright side, the pub opens at 4:00pm in the afternoon and the coffee, beer, and meals are good. One real bonus is the safe storage of your bike in a locked shed in which you can recharge your battery if you have an ebike. If a number of ebikes need to recharge, some may have to wait their turn so it pays to connect up - if you can - when you arrive.

Liked the proximity to the pub - the only place in Kumara for a meal - and the West Coast Wilderness Cycle Trail. Comfortable bed and the living room was also comfortable. Very safe storage for our bikes in a specialised locked shed, it was across the road in the grounds of the pub, and which also had the facilities for charging ebike batteries - a real bonus

Stunning Gardens! The lantern lights that lit up in the evenings around the gardens was beautiful. Our 11yr old always escaped in the Den to play darts. Great selection of board games, ring toss & a trampoline kept him busy which was great. The Wifi coverage was 💯 times better than the fancy 5 star hotels 😊

Beautiful old hotel. Clean and comfortable. Good secure bike storage. Great food and amazing staff. We couldn’t ride on the second day due to rain and had to wait for a a ride. The lovely staff offered us a lounge to sit and wait with coffee and tea and wifi. this was for bout 3 hours after checkout time.

Super easy location as it was right beside the Westcoast Wilderness trail which we were biking. Lovely old cottage, peaceful location. Friendly host who was welcoming in her emails and had good suggestions for what to do in Kumara.
