Guests staying at Catlins Newhaven Holiday Park are a 5-minute walk from Surat Bay, a long sand beach in Newhaven, where you may be lucky enough to see a Hooker Sea Lion.

We were very hesitant about bathroom sharing but it was a very pleasant experience. They about 10 steps away from our cabin and very clean, I never had to wait for the loo or a shower. The cabin was extremely cosy and the bed very comfortable.

Set in Owaka, Surat Bay Lodge by the Sea/Backpackers Hostel has a garden, shared lounge, BBQ facilities, and free WiFi throughout the property.

Room was small but comfortable, as no one else was in our area the facilities were fine. Had there been other guests the bathroom may not have been sufficient as one toilet was out of action.

Owaka is a small village, it has an excellent Inn especially for accommodation. The village has a small but well stocked supermarket, it has two restaurants and two cafes. It is quiet and peaceful. It is well located for visits to sites along the coast. It has a modern museum that gives you information on the history of Owaka it also had an art exhibition.

Amazing place and very central to all the amazing walks and sights to see in the Caitlin’s. Great pub for drinks and meals, shops, petrol and a cool playground for the kids! The information centre/museum etc was also great with very knowledgeable staff.

We all loved the local Museum, it was excellent. Also the bush walks to waterfalls, the Nuggets and Lost Gypsy Gallery were all wonderful! There's so much to do and see, we needed more time to see the Cathedral Caves; next time!

    Lovely wee town!

Lovely wee town! Make sure if you see the country store or little boutique stores open, you go and have a look!! My biggest regret is leaving that to our last day as there was so much to see! The park also has a nice picnic area too! Four square staff are lovely!!

Many environmental places nearby to visit.

Many environmental places nearby to visit. Exceptional museum/library that is worthwhile visiting. A few shops but interesting items. Local pub & cafes offer range of food. All highly recommended. Our must visits = Tunnel Hill (Take a torch), McLean Falls (track has a number of steps). Owaka is walking friendly everywhere.

Owaka, Southland, Catlins, a very special and underestimated Paradise where you can find tranquility and inner peace. The Mother Nature makes you feel like you are the only person in this wonderful part of the World. I can't wait to come back here again.....
