The location is perfect and makes it easy to enjoy Avalon. We walked everywhere and it was easy to pop back to the room to change or drop things off between activities.

To commend is the availability of public bathrooms and showers that were clean ans socked, friendly people, and the boat ride makes it feel like a vacation trip. The girls at Cafe Metropol are exceptionally gracious.
On the down side, absolutely everything is overpriced. A visit to the Casino, a not at all impresive building, is $20! For comparison, a visit to the Louvre is 22 euros, and to the Casino in Montecarlo is 20.
The beach is rocky, small, and in the same bay as all the boats anchor. Definetly not a reason to visit. The food is just ok, and the shops don't have anything that could not be found elsewhere for less money.
Still, Avalon has an easygoing and peaceful vibe, and the people are nice, so if you want to enjoy it for that, it's a nice place for a day trip.

No negatives.
No negatives. Very few cars allowed (have golf carts), so walking everywhere is more enjoyable. Very nice miniature golf and real golf. Events at the Casino. Restaurants to visit: Blue Water, Original Jack's, Pancake Cottage, Antonio's pizzeria / pasta, Eric's on the Pier.

If you are on a tight budget, Avalon might not be the place for you. A majority of the tours are priced relatively high for their worth. That being said, Avalon was beautiful, from the small shops on main street, the walkways and hiking trails, in addition to meeting an amazing set of locals who were kind, knowledgeable about their island, and frankly wanted to see others enjoy Avalon just as much as they do.

We've been to Catalina Island frequently.
We've been to Catalina Island frequently. This recent trip was just for two nights, and it definitely could have been longer. Our main activity was to hike the Garden to Sky loop, up from Hermit Gulch Trailhead and down through the Botanical Gardens. Trail is well marked, but quite strenuous due to extreme elevation gain. Weather was sunny and clear which made for spectacular views of both sides of the island.
Our accommodation came with a golf cart, which made exploring Avalon fun and convenient. We toured the scenic overlooks and also made stops at the various attractions in town such as the Casino, the Island Museum and Descanso Beach.
Had an excellent meal at NDMK Fish House on the first night and also enjoyed our Mexican dinner at Maggie's Blue Rose on the second night.
Avalon is small and extremely walkable. It really feels like an island escape, just a short distance away from Los Angeles.

Lots of activities in a beautiful beachfront setting,...
Lots of activities in a beautiful beachfront setting, nestled beneath and within a steeply cupping hillside. Water activities including "submarine" rides are great for kids, with kayaking, glass bottom boats, and beach. Many restaurants to explore, (fresh fish, steaks, Mexican, Pizza, burgers), touristy shopping but some surprisingly nice clothing stores as well. Hotels range from inexpensive, funky home conversions to some very comfortable (and pricey) hotels with fabulous views. The further back from the beach, the more adventurous the activities. Hiking, biking on trails with 1,500' elevation changes. Trans Catalina Trail with over 38 miles of mostly unshaded, strenuous, hiking through Bison range. (make noise or die). Unbelievable ocean, canyon views. Scuba, snorkel amongst garbaldi in very clear water, amongst kelp beds if you choose. 18 hole Catalina Island Golf Course. Eco Tours of the back country make exploring easy on a variety of trucks/hummers. Many scheduled island events worth attending and a few which are available only during summer months. Easy to get there, you can't believe what you have been missing once you visit.

Went for the 1st leg of the annual October JazzTrax festival Friday thru Sunday - loved it!! Don't skip the Catalina Express Commodore Lounge for the ride over from Long Beach - comfy, 1 cocktail included very schmooze friendly atmosphere if you like. Eli's Island Deli - tiny shop at the pier where you come in - best roast beef on rye I have ever had!! The "casino" ballroom concert venue is incredible but quite the uphill/downhill trek. Weather was superb at a balmy 69 degrees. Avalon is totally walkable with shops, dining and a true island getaway feel! Pretty hilly as you move inland. Food was excellent - Avalon Grill, Metropole, Steve's all special ambience, Lobster Trap perfectly steamed artichoke and seafood skewers, Jack's for Micheladas and awesome breakfast and El Galleon for raucus kareoke.

We liked the vibe of the hotel. It was not luxurious at all but we were not looking for it. Clean place - that was the main focus. Closeness to the race start for us was also the one of the most important factors. Some great places to eat were very close, like 50 steps away, including coffee and breakfast. Would stay there again.
Check in was quick and smooth, friendly and welcoming. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Love the little boutique hotel. The roof terrace with sofas was fabulous. We chilled there at the night and had lovely views of the surrounding area. Highly recommend
The room was very nicely appointed and felt very modern. The staff was very friendly and helped with suggestions around the city. The hotel and room itself were very clean.
