I would recommend staying around Ancient Messene rather than Kalamata and taking a day trip into Kalamata to walk around the old town and see a few of the museums. The waterfront at Kalamata is disappointing. Spending time in the old town rather the waterfront would be better time spent.Guest review byWilliamAustralia - Review score10.0

Pylos is a beautiful quiet town overlooking the incredible beauty of Navarino Bay. It's a great location to enjoy peaceful days and as a base to explore the wider area, I stayed at the Karalis Beach hotel which I recommend most highly - see my review and photos of The Karalis for pictures of the bay, castle, and other famous locationsGuest review byFrancesUnited Kingdom - Review score10.0

Small town near enough to Kalamata (airport) but far enough away to not have that hustle and bustle. Great meals to be had (we loved eating at Elies, Dioskouri, and the "New" Old Kardamyli Traditional Restaurant) and scattered shops to browse on the main street. There are pebble beaches and you'll see people swimming but we were there to simply relax and unwind, read, enjoy with weather and practice our Greek (but not to worry, nearly everyone there can speak English). Kritamos has traditional Greek music on Friday nights.Guest review byBradfordUnited States - Review score10.0

It is a hidden gem this place. We absolutely LOVED everything about it. The people were so lovely and friendly, food tasted gorgeous, VIEW! - THE MOST STUNNING VIEW, Sunsets are just beautiful, sandy beaches in Stoupa only, clean water, sea life perfect for snorkeling and exploring.Guest review byAnonymous - Review score10.0

Nice town, beaches in close proximity, old Town 5' from the center with amazing view, ancient places around. Also, famous places in less than an hour drive (Voidokoilia Beach, Costa Navarino hotels, Foinikounta, Pylos, etc.). Farming products (one of the world's best olive oil), nice food and relaxing holidays.Guest review byGeorgiosGreece - Review score10.0

Nice little town with a beautiful central square with a modern playground and a lot of nice cafes and restaurants around it. Very close to the beautiful Bouka beach. It is in the ideal location for many excursions in the surrounding area, all the main tourist attractions are within 45-60 mins slow driveGuest review byAnonymousGreece - Review score8.0

I was after a bit of down-time out after a long cycle with several friends, so the quiet little rural seaside town suited me. The harbour is being structurally rebuilt so I couldn't get a boat out to Proti island which was a disappointment. There are a few good beaches along the generally rugged coastline and some lovely restaurants in town. The agricultural nature of area means that it is not consistently pristine and there is a fair amount of farmers' litter evident. It would be ideal to have had a car for more exploring.Guest review byWheresmybike?South Africa - Review score8.0
We really enjoyed staying here.
We really enjoyed staying here. Three days was enough and was great to relax following a big hiking tour in Arcadia. The harbour front is small with local fishing boats coming and going. Plenty of really good restaurants to choose from with prices for all budgets. We found it very reasonable to eat out. There is access to the sea from steps down from one of the waterfront tavernas in the village. A short walk around to Pantazi beach has a good restaurant and sun beds. Going the other way is a great 5K trail to Stoupa, a bigger, busier resort with sandy beaches and many restaurants and sunbeds.Guest review byCoralUnited Kingdom - Review score10.0
A 'real' town with plenty going on even in October.
A 'real' town with plenty going on even in October. Wonderful castle to explore. Two beaches. Lots of tavernas and bars around the harbour, but with a chilled, relaxing atmosphere. Small supermarkets in town and a large one just outside. Gift shopping with plenty of local products.Guest review byAndrewUnited Kingdom - Review score10.0

I love Kalamata for its beautiful, extremely long beach and great shopping! The accommodation is extremely expensive, even in Winter, there is a lot of exploitation of tourists…. This is the most disappointing thing.Guest review bySofiaAustralia
