Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

LOCATION & activities!!! Right smack in the heart of Edinburgh's Royal Mile! Very walkable to just about anything! Very interesting to learn that this place used to be an actual prison!😱 The beer tasting down in their "Lost Close" was fun & the brews were PHENOMENAL!!! Slàinte!!!🍻

This is an amazing hostel! The pods are really great to have that extra bit of privacy. There’s a shelf, usb charger and hook inside the pod. The bathrooms were also amazing, and the kitchen was great for easily prepping food. There are heaps of activities run by the hostel, the walking tour in particular is great. The location also couldn’t be any better. Would highly recommend!

AustraliaThe only criticism I could possibly find was the lack of communal essentials (salt, pepper, oil, etc) for cooking.
Picture perfect hostel experience with fantastic amenities. Property is located literally dead centre of the Royal Mile, so it was nice and close to every major attraction and all focal points of Edinburgh. Kitchen was stocked with everything you could need to cook a meal or prep lunch for the next day. Showers and bathrooms were nice and clean, water pressure was great and heat perfect. Beds were ridiculously comfortable and the pods provided a nice bit of of privacy, and rooms are well equipped with secure lockers. Building itself is quite historical and The Close underneath it is super interesting.

United StatesHonestly, nothing! If I had to nitpick, I would say that a chair or stool in the sleep studios would be nice for putting on shoes.
The location is fantastic, right in the heart of old town! I love the history of the building (courthouse, jail) and that they continued with the theme throughout. Breakfast was a pretty good value for the money. The well-trained staff and facilities really set this hostel apart from others.

GermanyThe room was really small. I couldn't really open my luggage without blocking the walkway in the room. Not enough of toilets to share. Pricy for what it is. Breakfast was also a bit overpriced.
The hostel is right by the famous St. Giles cathedral. At night there was bagpipes performance next to the Parliament.

HungaryLittle bit pricey for such a small room but obviously you have to pay for the location.
The biggest advantage is the location. We had a private room with bathroom which was small but perfect for one night. The staff is very helpful, no much noise after 11, breakfast is OK, nothing special.

United KingdomThe only issue we experienced was the plumbing problems on our floor. The shared bathroom became 'out of service' after our first night as both toilets and showers didn't work properly. There were more facilities on other floors, however the one on ours was the largest one.
We couldn't have asked for a better location. The hostel was right in the historic centre next to all the central attractions. We stayed in the separate room with a double bed, rather than bunk beds, so the sleeping conditions were really good, no disturbances at all. The room was a little dark as the hostel is a transformed prison, so the windows were very tiny, but it added to the quirkiness of the place. Breakfast was also really good - plenty of options, savoury and sweet, enough to fuel you up for the day ahead!

United StatesThe location was great, right in the center of the Royal Mile with all the action within walking distance nearby. The dorms were organized well, giving you a sense of privacy even while sharing with many other people. The community kitchen was also helpful.

Stayed in a room of 12 mixed pods. Really clean. Large locker that is enough for a suitcase. Earplugs are free to pick up from reception. The shower room is really clean. They are designed into two areas where I can hang my dry clothes without worrying them getting wet. In Edinburgh centre close to everywhere within walking distance

United StatesNo outlet in the pod, only USB port. No extra lockers to keep luggage in when you show up early, only a tiny room already filled with suitcases
Location couldn’t have been better, cool and unique interior design, and the codes were quite spacious. Plenty of bathroom/showers and lockers. We stayed in the courtroom and even with 28 people in there I still felt we had enough room.

CanadaThe bathrooms, specifically garbages/sinks, could be cleaned more often - just a quick wipe before/after the evening and morning rush. When I arrived every bin was overflowing. That being said there is a QR code to request cleaning I just felt weird about using it.
The pods were convenient, but keep in mind it does get a bit warmer at night as you’re essentially in a box - there is a thermostat to offset this which is nice. The breakfast is good for the price and if you’re a big breakfast eater. Staff were friendly and customer service was amazing when I contacted them. I like that they have coffee to purchase to-go and the environment overall when I was there morning/evenings was relaxed. If you’re sightseeing it’s conveniently in the middle of everything.
