Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThe choice of local restaurants seemed underwhelming; but then again, we didn't do much research and didn't want to walk too far.
We were impressed right from the start, with pre-arrival contact and a very friendly welcome. Terrence and Piper are exceptional hosts, and have created something very special at The Devonian: a delightful room (two comfy chairs always helps), attractive gardens with so many separate sitting out areas, a superb breakfast with innovative dishes and creative table layout; and the extras that go well beyond your standard B&B: gym, sauna, cinema room, and a stylish bar (with minimal mark-ups on pricing). Loved it ...

United KingdomThis was our 2nd time staying here, and the Devonian exceeded our expectations yet again. The hospitality, cleanliness, and amenities are 2nd to none, making it excellent value for money, along with a delicious breakfast. Thank you, Terence and Piper, for making our stay so enjoyable. Needless to say, we will return !

United KingdomThat we only booked for 1 night!
Extremely well presented! We stayed in the small “budget” room but it was still spacious enough and well laid out with everything we needed. Hosts were so friendly and welcoming, and very helpful sharing local recommendations!

United KingdomThe fact we only had two nights!!! Everything was perfect. Even the weather!
Wow! Setting was amazing, the most beautiful grounds. Just a short walk down to town/harbour. We were made to feel so welcome. Just a shame we only had the two nights there. The rooms were immaculate and breakfast was fabulous. Bottled water was a nice touch, it's the little things. We will definitely return if we are back down south.

United KingdomJust one very very minor point. When we arrived we needed to ask for an extra set of towels. These were provided upon request but as we were very tired it felt a bit of a chore to need to ask. It could have been an oversight they had not been put in the room originally.
This is an exceptional B&B. Quality and attention to every detail are evident. We particularly liked the fact that breakfast is customised to your preferences. The standard of the food was very good. It was delicious. Hosts are very friendly and helpful. They gave us an excellent suggestion for a restaurant based on their own personal experience and it was spot on. We stayed one night and were sad that we could not explore the garden or relax in the residents lounge for longer. It is located up a bit of a hill from the centre but it is worth every step!

United KingdomThe room would have benefited from a bottle opener being available. Also, the toilet cistern needs looking at as it was difficult to flush. Very minor gripes if I am being honest.
As I checked out of The Devonian, I explained to the owner that I would not be able to give them 5 stars........as I wanted to give them 6 stars! I can honestly say this B&B is excellent. I have stayed in Ilfracombe twice before, and both previous B&B/Hotels were truly awful. The Devonian owners Piper and Terence were very accommodating to me in that I needed a very early Sunday morning breakfast, in order to catch the ferry boat to Lunday Island. They also provided excellent communication both before my stay and during checkin/checkout. Whilst there are parking facilities on site, spaces are limited and could be tricky to park the car into the spaces and get out again. However, the owners did warn me about this suggested parking on the road opposite, which was much easier to be honest. The room itself, was tastefully decorated with tea/coffee making facilities (and biscuits!) and spotlessly clean. There were multiple helpful information cards in the room and free Wi-Fi was also available. The shower room was small, but very clean. Within the B&B was a bar, gym, library and outside were beautiful gardens, all available to guests. The breakfast was of excellent quality too. Great sausages and bacon, supplemented by fruit, cereals, toast, tea/coffee, as required. All excellently presented. The Ilfracombe quayside is a 15 minute walk from The Devonian. There's the usual things to eat and drink in that area including icecreams, pasties, fish & chips. Watch out for the seagulls who'll try and nick your chips! This is where you can experience a day trip to Lundy Island, which I can highly recommend. To be honest, calling The Devonian a B&B is doing it a disservice, it is a hotel of great quality and the hosts are clearly going above and beyond what is typical for the area. They deserve your business!

WOW. They put the B in B&B ! Squicky clean, great breakfast, personal touch everywhere you look. There's a movie room, sauna, gym, bar, and don't miss out on a stroll in the beautiful garden with the stream at the edge of it! MAGICAL. Also the location is excellent, in a nice part of town on a quiet road but within 15 min walk from the harbor. Exceptional. Piper & Terence put so much love into this place. Also responded very quickly and easy communication. Will definitely be back. Highly recommend!

United KingdomTerrance and Piper, despite their youth, offer exceptional -old school- hospitality. After welcoming us into their home, a quick tour of the grounds and facilities highlighted the first class nature of this bed and breakfast. Gym, film room and bar were fab. The bedroom was comfortable, spacious and well equipped. Then came the cherry on the top.....breakfast was nothing short of perfect. My fiancée is devastating plagued with a diary allergy, which often makes small independent businesses a no-go. But not at The Devonian who are happy to cater for allergies (and vegans) and made every adjustment possible to make the start of the day- a great one! We highly recommend this place. Thank you for a wonderful stay. Adam.
