I probably wouldn’t recommend it for a stay with very small children - the design of the house means you have to keep a very tight eye on them at all times, which is a little stressful (there are some fairly low walls with a drop of several storeys into the courtyard, and our boys managed to break a couple of things too as soon as our backs were turned). In retrospect it would have been better for us to stay closer to the beach somewhere more designed for families - it’s quite a trek to get to the beach from the town. But for a single person or couple it’s great.

This is a beautiful old house with a lovely roof terrace, and we enjoyed the private balcony outside our room. It’s a great place to explore Lamu Town from, and Mohamed was super helpful and friendly, as well as an informative guide. They provided a cot for us, which was useful, and pick-up from the airport worked very smoothly. The breakfasts are delicious. I appreciated the commitment to reducing single-use plastic, with filtered water provided in the rooms.

The service of organising our special guide for a tour through town. And the best boat tour with the captain who is passionate about sailing the traditional Dow boats. The beautiful .traditional house, the rooftop with wind from the sea, the breakfast, the friendly staff.

The mosquito net in the room was big and durable, but it was thick and blocked pretty much all the airflow from the ceiling fan, so we had to choose between being cool or being safe from the hungry insects.

The decor in the common area is gorgeous. The owner, Mary, was chill and fun to talk to. Breakfast was great and made-to-order. The location is fantastic for exploring the labyrinthine streets of Lamu. The roof terrace is the perfect height to see out over the roofs of old town.

No warm water, but we personally did not find it inconvenient. No airconditioning, but this is known beforehand. There are fans, though they might be noisy for some people while trying to sleep.

A beautiful traditional Swahili house at a fantastic location. Really enjoyed the terrace. Mary, the owner is a very interesting and helpful lady. Breakfast was very decent. There is also the possibility to have a tasty home-made dinner if you inquire about it.

Beautiful original house which has been renovated very nicely with very lovely owner and staff always around to answer any questions or have a short chat. Also really appreciate the pick up service from the airport, Mohamed was waiting for us at the exit of the airport, taking a boat together and bringing us to Amu house

The breakfast was great, and Alex (the manager) and Mary (the owner) were very friendly and welcoming. The house is gorgeous and we were the only guests during our stay, so we enjoyed the peace and quiet :) The rooftop is beautiful where you can read a book or watch the city below. The Wifi worked quite well most of the time, which was a bonus. We did two tours with Mohamed - the sunset dhow cruise and a history/culture walk through Lamu. Both were amazing and I highly recommend them. There is no hot water but the weather was so hot, it was refreshing to have cold showers. I definitely recommend this bnb!

If requesting airport pickup service, confirm that the person sent will hold up a sign with your name on it at the arrivals gate. This will save you time, energy and you will avoid the unnecessary chaos that otherwise ensues.

I was awoken at 04.50 each morning with the noise from the nearby Mosque, but it was to be expected.

Excellent location in the heart of Lamu town. I was given the choice of the available rooms. I loved the decor. Beautiful view of the sunrise from the terrace. Breakfast was so tasty. Muhammed also arranged a brilliant sunset boat trip for me for a great price.

The only issue was with the owner of the property, who tried to charge us for 2 rooms even though we ended up switching to 1 (and confirming the change in price). The staff in Amu House were all lovely, friendly and helpful - but the owner was very rude over the phone!

    Nothing to mention

AMU house is a beautiful old and carefully restaured historical house. And the terrace on the roof top is perfect for relaxing and reading. The right place when you prefer the authentic life of Lamu to the touristy places of Shela. Thank you, Mary and Hussein for your hospitality, for your time, for organizing a stunning sailing trip, and for our unforgettable walk on Manda Island.
