Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomIt is a little difficult to find, so you just need to make sure you've checked on SatNav beforehand as you will loose signal as you get closer.
Lovely place with a beautiful view. We definitely recommend going to the natural pool. The room was spacious and comfortable.

United KingdomNo negatives
Three major things going on at Benjamin cottage: firstly the view is absolutely gorgeous. It’s quite isolated, this place, so if you want bars etc it’s probably not for you, but if you like peace, quiet, nature, you will love it. Secondly, the cottage has its own waterfall. It’s about 15 mins down a track, and it’s very likely that you will have the place to yourself, as we did. Absolutely magical. Thirdly you have the absolute legend that is Udita, the manager and chef. Utterly brilliant. Need a car for the five hour trip to Colombo to make your train? Hardly any notice? Udita will sort you out in a flash, with a huge smile on his face. What a guy. One of the most extraordinary places of our trip.

United KingdomThe location is very cut off (30 mins drive from Haputale) which is kind of the charm, but they could do more to account for the isolation. - The drivers were really expensive, and it's not like you have much choice given the location. I didn't get the impression the staff were trying to find us a good deal, which was disappointing. - WIFI is very patchy. Starlink may be in order! - Food is decent, but doesn't utilise much local produce - especially given the fruit and veg in town look amazing! - Supplies are a bit limited, eg. bottled drinks. Point about the safe spring water needs to be communicated better. - A map of the grounds/ local places to walk would have been helpful.
Location is stunning. The local monkeys and palm squirrels provide endless entertainment. We also saw a magnificent eagle and (unfortunately) a bunch of leeches while wandering the grounds (it had been raining!) Food is good (although options limited) and staff are very welcoming. Place is also clean and comfortable.

United KingdomIf you want a fully-immersive jungle experience (the sounds of a cacophony of birds, insects, frogs and countless other creatures) with wonderful staff and delicious food then Benjamin Cottage takes some beating! The soundproofing meant that despite the jungle noise we slept soundly after watching fireflies on the balcony. Our driver stayed there with us and on the first night complained that there was nothing to do as the wifi signal wasn’t strong enough… by the second night he was getting the details from the manager as he wanted to bring his family to stay there! While close to Haputale as the crow (surely parakeet?) flies, it is quite a winding drive down the hill, so recommend that you have dinner either at Benjamin Cottage or elsewhere before you return.

GermanyOnly parking for one car. Getting there and turning on the property was quite a adventure. I had a Toyota Prius. Very narrow road to the property. Would be nice to have a pool on the property.
The view, the beautiful room, the fantastic helpful and friendly staff. The excellent food. Definitely worth to take the adventures road to the house. Looks exactly like on the pictures.

NetherlandsThe only thing that could have been better was the timing of the food, which was sometimes a bit later than promised. Hardly a major issue though, especially if you're not in a hurry.
The host was great. Very friendly and attended to all our needs. The view of the place is spectacular and for that alone worth a visit. The place itself was very good quality for the money. Nothing too fancy, straightforward and clean, and nice bathrooms. Food was good!
