Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Hasthi Safari Cottage is run by Dasun and his family. The place is beautiful and well maintained. The beds are comfortable, and the shower gives you a jungle vibe:) We had dinner and lunch at the place, both cooked by Dasun’s Mom, not only it was delicious, but also beautifully served! He went above and beyond to make our stay special. We had interesting conversations and he was always happy to answer our questions. We booked private safari with Dasun, and we didn’t regret that! It was an amazing experience, very well organized, our driver/guide was very knowledgeable and experienced! Dasun is a great host, who genuinely wants to help you have the best time possible. I very much liked that he was interested in our opinion about the place, what to improve to make it better etc.

AustraliaOnly thing of note was no mosquito nets in the room, and small gaps in windows/doors where they could get in, so just had to be extra vigilant with bug spray - not a huge issue but worth noting.
Dasun was great at communicating with us even in the lead up to our stay. He went above and beyond, organising transport from ella to udawalawe and to tangalle the next day. We were given tea on arrival, he filled up our pool, offered us dinner and organised our safari. The safari guide was also 10/10 - extremely knowledgable, friendly and a great eye for spotting even the smallest of animals, and a lovely breakfast provided. Overall would definitely recommend.

Dasun and his team are very welcoming. We arrived and he made everything possible. He filled our pool to let us cool down, served tasty juices and made a nice dinner for us both. He also gave us bikes to visit the elephant transit home and organised a private safari tour for us with breakfast inside the park! Helped us to find the best way (bus) to arugam bay.

Czech RepublicAmazing place! We really enjoyed our stay in Hasthi Safari Cottage which has great vibe, stylish rooms and especially the owner is brilliant :) Dasun is very friendly and helpful. He cooked home-made dinners (including typical dessert :) and breakfasts for us, everything was so tasty :) He was very caring and cooked also non spicy food for our little girls. He also arranged a safari tour for us, drove us to the river to have a swim and even took us to Ella where we were heading from Udawalawe. It was a real pleasure to meet you, Dasun, and we hope to see you again in future :)

United Arab EmiratesThe breakfast wasn't to our British tastes but the owner was happy to change for the next day. There was some noise from dogs in the first night but second night was fine. The room was very dark. Not much to do in the area and it's hard to plan safari because of the weather. We had good weather so could haveoved on earlier but still enjoyed relaxing at the cottage.
Hasthi cottages are nestled away in the greenery, a very short walk from the town. The cottages are beautiful, very cool and a fun experience for our kids. Beds were big and comfy, air con good. The outside bathroom was fun, the kids loved showering outside, surprisingly hardly any bugs. The cottages are not far from udawalawa national park, we had a great safari there in the morning. Theres not much in the town to do but the owner had music playing and tried to make it a nice vibe. Our first night we had dinner cooked by the owners mother which was delicious. Lovely curry, rice, salad and a desert of buffalo milk pudding. It was all really nice and he set a nice abiance in the restaurant cabin. The owner is chatty and it was nice to hear about his life as a chef. Breakfast was Sri lankan, but our fussy eaters didn't eat much so we requested just eggs and toast the next day and they did exactly that which was appreciated. Overall a lovely stay and an experience to stay in the huts.

United KingdomThe room was very hot, as you'd expect. The air con was temperamental, however, we were on safari, so can't expect 5* Especially for these prices. Overall, very happy.
This was a great budget friendly place to get back to nature. There was a rustic charm as you would expect. Really chilled backpacker vibes. The host had the best English we found in any of the rural hotels and made a great effort to welcome us. The outside bathroom was amazing; two different showers and a mini plunge pool which was very refreshing as it was so hot.
