Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaIncredible location with amazing views, the cottage was very clean with nice smelling sheets and towels. The whole family made me feel welcome and particularly Shirodh was very accommodating throughout the stay and insightful during the Lipton’s Seat and plantation tour. There was tea and cake on arrival and the homecooked meals were a delight. A great experience of Sri Lankan hospitality.

We liked the place very much. The family who runs it is so friendly and generous. Unfortunately both our children got sick during our stay but we had a lot of help to go to doctor etc. The family really tries to give you a little extra help so that your stay will be pleasant. The rooms are basic but clean. The wiews are stunning (if it is not raining...) The food is excellent!

IrelandNot an issue for us but just to note that it's not suitable for those with dog or cat allergies
The family that run the guesthouse were so incredibly kind and generous with their time! Their sons took us in their tuk tuk to see local sites (Tour with Shirodh) and taught us how to play Sri Lankan games. The meals were communal with the other guests and the food was amazing! It's off the road so very quiet and the views from the property were superb! We will definitely return!

DenmarkIt’s nothing bad, but just for information: there is a lot of stairs you need to take up and down. And it’s a bit out of the city, but super easy to reach by bus or tuk tuk.
It’s a basic and clean room, it had everything you need. On top of that the view is incredible. We woke up to see the sunrise directly from the bed. The family is so welcoming, we had super good dinner and breakfast there, and they helped us with arranging transport and giving us tips for sightseeing. Totally recommend!

FranceWe came during the rainy season so the room that we initially choose was really humid. They immediately understood our concerns and changed us to another one a bit less humid.
The host family is so wonderful ! They organize everything for you from the tuk tuk to food (very delicious breakfast and dinner!!), to excursions. All the family was really kind to us and explained us a lot about local culture, highly recommended to stay in Haputale.

AustriaThe blankets were a little smelly (propably didn't really dry because of the rainy weather). I would recommend to bring a thin sleeping bag.
The view is amazing. The owner's family welcomed us in their home as if we would be part of it. The mum cooks amazing!

ItalyThis is the best place I stayed during my 2 months in Sri Lanka. The location and the view are stunning, in the middle of the nature, the family who runs the guesthouse is extremely friendly and helpful, they do everything they can to make you feel like home since the first moment you arrive. The food is without a doubt the best I ever had in this country, the rice and curry is just delicious and always freshly cooked. The rooms are very clean and have amazing view, everything was perfect

NetherlandsThe family was super welcoming and friendly. The homestay is only a short bus ride (about 5 minutes) from Haputale and the bus stops right at the accommodation. At the bus stop there is also a small shop (Franky's Hut). It offers tea and very good freshly made sweet samosas! The view is amazing and the rooms are basic but it's clean and they have everything you need. The family knows a lot about the area and gave us many good tips on what to do, and also how to get there. The mom of the family also cooks amazing Sri Lankan food and breakfast that you should not miss. The accommodation is also on the way to Lipton's Seat. We went at Sunrise (Tuk tuk) and walked back to the accommodation. Very nice through the tea plantations. We definitely recommend staying here! If we had more time in Sri Lanka we would have stayed longer. Thank you so much for your hospitality (except for Viraj ;) ), and best wishes from Patrick & Simone

United KingdomWe had no idea there was so much the homestay could help us with / do for us when we first arrived!
The family were amazing. So kind, friendly, helpful, approachable and fun! They really welcomed you in as one of their own. When we arrived we were invited to join a festival in the local village with Viraj & we also had Shirodh as our tour guide for Diyaluma falls (you must go but don’t go without Shirodh!!! He knows all the tips and tricks, doesn’t rush you & it’s like hanging out with a friend). Ferina (the mum) is an incredible cook and apparently was featured on TV for her cooking before! Definitely ask about tours, cooking classes and tuktuk rides as we didn’t realise how much the family did until we had been there a couple of days. We saw a Jungle Fowl outside the main door of the property (chasing their chickens)! The hut at the top of the steps is owned by one of the family members (Franky) who is also wonderful. His shop has the BEST tea we’ve ever had. So many flavours!!! You cannot go to Haputale without trying it. The bus also stops there so it’s very convenient for getting to the shops in Haputale or when coming back from the tea factory. We also rented a scooter whilst we were staying there which was great / very convenient: we picked it up from Franky’s hut and dropped it back to the same place. The view from the bedroom was also amazing. The stay was super cheap and the room was functional with a comfortable bed. Haputale is also soooo much better than Ella for seeing lots of sights!!!!! We’ve stayed in both places now and can confirm for definite. The nearby village is very friendly too and the family at white monkey try and direct business there where they can (E.g. the scooter rental, etc) which is nice as they’re very community Orientated. They also do volunteer option for your stay (work for your stay) but we didn’t do this.
