How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews

Very dated needs some serious TLC. Essential kitchen utensil lacking. Washing up liquid would of been nice. Our room had a electrical issue.
It was clean and the beds were comfortable.

Value for money, when compared to other stays in South Africa. Everything was on an acceptable standard, but definately not priced right. With this rating I compared the accomodation to others with similar pricing, which I have been to, and based my rating on that.
Very friendly and helpfull staff. Rooms are neat. Security is adequate.

no heating, taps all loose, water was running very slow in the shower with no hot water, cleanliness poor. Premises too congested with trees and plants. Why advertise a pool if it is dirty

The mattresses on the beds are old and uncomfortable. The kitchen had very limited crockery and cutlery. Walls are in need of damp repair. THE PARKING AREA WAS SO SMALL AND VERY IMPRACTICAL TO USE.
The owner assisted me with sorting the parking problem.

Our overnight stay at Tula in Bloemfontein was the ultimate anticlimax of our family vacation, and we wish we had continued home to Johannesburg or got a refund. Unfortunately, the deal had no refunds. What we saw advertised in the pictures when we booked was something we could see and yearn for from afar and the dingy alternative we got instead. It felt like a real slap in the face, a rude awakening to experiences, and a feeling of discrimination. A suitable, comfortable, renovated and new alternative ( which attracted my family and me to book at Tula) lay empty the whole miserable night. We were shocked, but sometimes in our Ubuntu culture, we avoid confrontation and suck it in, yet we bleed inside. I wish hosts indicate the kind of guests they prefer or cannot accommodate once they see the names and surnames of ethnic people booking in the initial stages of the booking. This accommodation booking was the worst out of a string of places we stayed in, from Middleburg to PE and East London. (Due to the discriminatory behaviours). And a big holiday spoiler. I am not sure this review will matter much to anyone since some of us are insignificant. Nevertheless, it is also a lesson learnt!
The location is central and good for a travelling family like ours. Our two daughters enjoyed playing in the play area and the youngest commented that the only good thing was the DSTV. The generator.

The cottage was not very clean - very dusty. The curtain rings came off the rod and curtains hanging loosely. The bunkbed in the entrance area had a torn top sheet on. Think it needs some TLC and a woman's touch.
The garden is beautiful and it is nice and quiet. Enough blankets supplied for the cold Bloemfontein nights. Overall it was a good experience. Cars are safe. Johan is very friendly.

The fact that the Linen was very dirty the night we checked in. Its unfortunate we checked in very late and didn't want to inconvenience the owner. WE even showed the cleaning lady the visibly dirty Linen which she changed. Also the carpet was dirty showing signs of not having being given a good clean in a long while, walking in socks made the socks dirty.
The yard was beautiful and well kept and the area is easily accessible. The water was always hot for bathing though the shower was small. Also appreciated the backup generator.

Some suggestion to improve the unit is: to maybe have the shower walls "grout/tiles" cleaned properly and the double bed is lump on one side. The extra blankets in the unit can also be upgraded since they are very old.
Johan, did not have a problem with us changing our arrival time, and he left the units light on for us in order for us to find it quickly.
