Our reception on arrival left us feeling dissatisfied but the hotel was otherwise good.
Before arrival, we had booked a comfort room through booking.com. Initially we were going to book a standard but saw on the hotel's website that comfort room bookings included access to the hotel spa. On booking.com it did not indicate if this was also true for comfort rooms booked through booking.com.
On arrival the hotel was busy with a conference. I attribute much on the receptionist's attitude to the stress of their situation - we felt like another obstacle in her day that she needed to get through as quickly as possible. This was noticeable in simple things. One example was omitting to tell/remind us where the elevator was for access to our 4th floor room - pillars in the lobby obscured it from view such that we missed it and took the stairs. Another example was the lack of an offer of somewhere to secure our bicycles (even when asked) but instead direction to just find somewhere in the carpark - the 5 other hotels on our bike trip had all had a storage room or similar where bicycles could be kept.
Our final disappointment was that the booking through booking.com of a comfort room did not grant spa access in the way that a direct booking of a comfort room through the hotel website does. This was understandable but unexpected and poorly explained by the staff - as though we should have known and was not something that should be made clearer on both booking.com (i.e. wellness not included) and on the hotel's website (i.e. wellness offer exclusive for direct bookings with the hotel).
Otherwise the hotel room was fine, though uncomfortably warm despite the cool April night. The hotel could get some thinner bed covers to make sleeping less warm (with thicker blankets for those needing them placed in a wardrobe) and the hotel should consider investing in energy saving lightbulbs or led lighting to reduce heating of the room by their incandescent bulbs.
These hotels offer something a little different in the way of design and usually sit in a trendy, urban part of town. More intimate than your average hotel, they offer high standards with a homely vibe.
