Great town for families, with lots of pedestrianised areas, little traffic, and lots of sandy beaches that are never busy. Cheaper than Knokke or Bruges, Ostend is also a perfect base for exploring Flanders, with everything within a short drive or train journey and nice beaches on your doorstep for the days you don't feel like exploring.

My wife and I visited Ostend for the first time over 30 years ago with a group of travelers. It is one of those places that you just feel at home in. There are plenty of bars and restaurants however we have found our favorites and generally stick to those. Den Artiest is a place that has to be visited at least once in your life. For those that like chicken the Cluck Cluck (as we call it) cant be forgotten too. There used to be a wonderful quirky pub, the Cosey Corner, but that has been closed down. We took our kids there annually as they were growing up, now they are taking their partners.

Ostend is an ideal base for visiting Belgium.
Ostend is an ideal base for visiting Belgium. Beautiful beaches, not to busy and Only a 15 minute train ride into Brugge.
Lots of lovely places to get your traditional Belgium waffles, Belgium beers, Belgium chocolates, and a lot cheaper than Brugge.
Georges tea room is an ideal places to get your waffles. Well worth the money.
Ostend has a tram system which makes getting around very easy. Just remember, Knokke is the end of line in the North and De Panne is the end of the line in the south. A very scenic ride along the coast.

Have visited often over the years, dissapointed at the many closures of restaurants compared to previous visits. Not as many options for eating out or getting a snack. We were there at the end of season , so that may be why, but there seemed to be a lot of building work going on wherever you turned.
The main advantage is that the public transport, trains/trams/buses, are so regular you can travel to other places easily.

For sure we could have used some extra days - but this is the beauty of short trips: go, explore and leave something for the next times.
We did not plan a lot: we knew the hotel, nicely located between the station, the beach and the centre.
We also booked and activity to Astropolis and this was a total success- if you have (Dutch speaking) kids (above 8 years), the rocket workshop is SUPERB!
As a science nerd I enjoyed the Astropolis museum and its little "hidden" gems : the lunar rover, the piloting of the Appolo to dock the ISS, the excellent documentaries (I got the one narrated by Patrick Stweart -aka CapitanJean-Luc Picard, in Startrek!
The rest of the museum is mostly with information in Dutch, but with interactive screens also in English.
In case the workshop for the kids takes longer than your visit they have a nice café, reasonably priced and with small brilliant gift ideas like metal models to assemble at home - from R2D2 to the Hubble telescope. I absolutely loved the museum!
Another place not to miss is the Mercator museum. It is a former three-mast school-ship, serving fro.1933 to 1960 and the visit is perfectly organised. For me it was very moving to learn and see details in the lives of the seamen and cadets (thay started at 14 years old!) who lived, learned and navigated the oceans on this ship.
As a bonus there is another museum - a cargo boat, Amandine - we left this for a next visit.
There is also the Napoleon fort we look forward to visit next time. The same with James Ensor museum, the parks etc.
This time we enjoyed long walks on the pier and the beach, seeing the cute seals, going in and out of the numerous and friendly cafés, discovering the excellent seafood in its many expressions (Italian, local, burger style :), etc.), the marina, the fish market and so on.
Oostende conquered us with its livelihood and for sure we will go back and enjoy more of its charm!

Recently renovated with modern facilities and clean look.
Hotel is really close to the beach (less than 2 min walk) and in close vicinity of restaurants, bars and shopping areas.
Big underground public parking available for 25Euro/day (Parking Indigo Oostende Kursaal 1).
If you plan to eat breakfast or dinner outside of the hotel i would recommend making a reservation well in advance because all the quality restaurants are usually booked in advance.
Really nice small hotel with a perfectly convenient location right in the center of Ostende. Absolutely friendly staff. Probably some renovation could be welcomed but taking into account price/quality ratio, it is great choice for weekend stay
Location and cleanliness are super spacious with a magnificent view from the top floor.
A bonus for the delicious Belgium chocolate ox with tea & coffee in the kitchen drawer
Excellent hotel - we always go to upstairs when we visit Oostende. Fun decor, friendly staff and lots of things for kids to do on a rainy day. Breakfasts are outstanding too.
