Cheb is a town with a fascinating history and a main square...
Cheb is a town with a fascinating history and a main square (commemorating King John of Podebrad) that has buildings dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Check out particularly the houses at the far end of the square and read their history. It's a varied and interesting street scene. The main church at the far end of the square is Romanesque in origin but parts were destroyed in the war. As always in central Europe some buildings suffered in the various wars in the 16th and 17th centuries. Some buildings are typical of the Art Nouveau/secession style and have been well restored. We were really glad to have visited this part of Sudetenland - now ,of course thoroughly Czech even if some people do still speak some German. Restaurants weren't particularly memorable but the beer (as always!) good. Medieval town with very nice city center.
Medieval town with very nice city center. You can visit Cheb castle, town's museum (spent 3 hours there!), retro museum, multiple churches and monasteries or you can tak a train and in few minutes you're in bath city of Františkovy Lázně, or SOOS. Cheb's chief attraction is its main square, full of beautiful old painted houses. I visited in May, and though there were tourists about, it wasn't overcrowded. Nor was it overpriced - coffees, restaurants and delicious Italian ice creams were very good value. Only joint facilities in the end of a long corridor. All night long there were coming a crowds of a drunk German visitors . They were so noisy and aggressive that we were had to call to police. We also got a parking card, so we could park directly in from of the house. The apartment is very large with a large bedroom and livingroom. My room was new and spacious. The toilet was shared but exceptionally clean. WiFi signal was excellent.
