We were there for only a day but would definitely return. It has an upmarket 'sailing fraternity' feel but has managed to retain its traditional charm and has a host of interesting shops including lots of good quality clothes shops.

Sited more or less midway between Orford and Southwold it is a great base for exporing the beautiful Suffolk Coast. The marshes north and south of Aldeburgh are lovely and are all dog friendly.
Aldeburgh itself is very nice, but fortunately we visited in March and so it wasn't too busy with tourists or those having second weekend homes there.
The stoney beach makes hard walking (compared with the sandy beaches I'm used to) but behind them are some great walking and cyling paths.
We've been there several times, and will keep going back.

We stayed Saturday night and Sunday night, late Feb.
Many restaurants are close Sunday and Monday nights, so plan for that.
We ate at Prezzo on Sunday, and it was fine.
A bunch of book shops around Aldeburgh, and a number of letting agencies/estate agents/ etc. probably because it's a desirable location.
Visit Fishers Distillery, walk to the clover-leaf Martello Tower, but don't intrude on the residents.
We had a great time here. Hope you do too.

Aldeburgh is unique in its strong atmosphere of a fishing town and in particular for its unbreakable link with Benjamin Britten, whose life and music are present everywhere. (His great opera Peter Grimes is set in a very thinly disguised version of the town). Neaarby there are lots of good nature walks, and although it's not easy to get to, it's a good centre for visiting the marvellous churches of East Suffolk. The town is charming, unmodernised and, I think, full of retirees.

A charming, characterful and atmospheric place.
A charming, characterful and atmospheric place. A beautiful, unspoilt, archetypal English seaside village. But with a good range of services and facilities, including shops and cafes/restaurants. Along the lonely seashore Britten's music echoes hauntingly in your head.

We love Aldeburgh, a quaint and interesting village, lots of places to visit in the area, good restaurants and interesting bars. A good selection of high end shops. It's great to park the car for a couple of days and enjoy the area.

Our room was fairly small but we loved the view out to sea. We liked the little nooks in the hotel lounge and the main hotel restaurant food and location were very good. The staff were all helpful. The Indian restaurant meal was delicious but we felt the portions were small and it was overpriced as we only ate vegetarian dishes. Aside from that, our visit was all we were hoping for.
Beautifully presented cottage. Great for our family trip from Scotland. We were down staying in Aldeburgh and sailing at the yacht club. We have two small children aged 3 and 1. Cottage was well placed and easy walk into town and to the yacht club
Location, great for exploring Aldeburgh and surrounding areas, dogs loved the garden. Lots of nearby shops and restaurants and cafe on site do some amazing breakfasts. River Retreat itself was clean and tidy and big enough for us and 2 dogs.
