Gateway to the Inner Hebrides
Oban is a city built around a late 18th-century distillery that produces one of the finest single malt whiskeys in Scotland. This normally peaceful town is invaded during summer when tourists use it as a base to visit the Inner Hebrides islands such as Mull, Lismore and Coll, supporting its status as the Gateway to the Isles.
The horseshoe-shaped Oban Bay is sheltered by Kerrera Island with its spectacular Gylen Castle. Award-winning seafood restaurants and lively pubs line George Street and the waterfront of Corran Esplanade adjacent to the harbour.
Take a short walk up the hill to McCaig’s Tower, a structure based on the Roman Colosseum, for the finest views of Oban’s centre and the outer islands. When you get back down to sea level, stroll into and stumble out of the Oban whiskey distillery after sampling the local version of the 'water of life'.
Admire the coastal scenery as you travel a bit out of town to the 7th-century ruins of Dunollie Castle, home of the Clan MacDougall. The Firth of Lorn gives visitors a fanatstic opportunity to try some sea kayaking.

The bathroom in the petite double was good but might be awkward for larger person.Excellent seafood at EE usk and several other places. Oban is a lovely town full of friendly people.
Oban is a lovely town full of friendly people. It is the best location to explore the outer Hebrides. Plenty of comfortable hotels and great restaurants. And of course cozy pubs! It seems that everywhere you go there is a spectacular view of the port. We were there in March 2025 which is still quiet but I am told it is crazy busy in the summer months so book ahead. The Caledonian McBrayne ferry service was top notch. If you are taking your car on the ferry, book well in advance. It is a stunning part of Scotland and indeed the world. The day trip to the Isle of Mull was a stand out. There is a bus which meets the ferry and takes you up to Tobermory - a joyful, picturesque little town with great restaurants and a couple of pubs. I highly recommend a small tucked away restaurant called Bistro on the Brae with fresh off the boat seafood and a daily blackboard menu.
