Really friendly staff and locals , great food with out any frills. Breakfast was good and well cooked. The couple running it were very welcoming and evening meal with a few drinks really good value. It's under new management which I guessed , the room was a bit "tired" but spotless. Apparantly they're going to refurb the rooms anyway.

Lovely family room. New, comfortable, clean, peaceful, in a nice location to access several touristic attractions. Amazing breakfast. Exactly what we asked for. Paul is a great host, we could not have asked for anything better.

Lovely room with beautiful view (we had room 4) The owners were very friendly and caring. The extras for breakfast such as eggs or sausages were freshly made to order. We felt at home. In the evening you can enjoy a cool drink in the in-house bar. There are also 2 really cute dogs here

Nestled amongst the mountains with paths and tracks leading all over what’s not to like? Sadly, the general facilities here have gone. No shop for example. One place did have a sign out for coffee, but there could be an opportunity here for someone. Worth climbing up the Cateran Trail heading south to get stunning views looking down on the village. Also visit the stone circle, old bridge and the church. Just soak up the atmosphere!

Cannot fault the scenery but you must be a keen hiker or golfer to spend time here. You are miles from anywhere and only one main road, the A93, which is awful. Days out mean a challenging drive on roads with steep climbs, sharp bends and constant gear changes. This can be tiring and a little frightening at night. Three nights was one too many here.

Beautiful peaceful setting, some lovely period features and very friendly staff, but needs a bit of work done on it. We had moveable heaters in our room, but still little chilly. Bathrooms could be doing with upgrade.

A great area for walkers or hikers & bird watchers & if you like peace & quiet. The Wifi was not great where stayed. In these modern times most people need Wifi to keep in touch with family & friends. Ballater is a nice place to visit & some good walks & well sign posted. Nice cafes & shops there too. You need a car together there. Dunked is also a pretty place e to visit. .

We felt some trepidation prior to our stay due to the mixed reviews online, but our fears proved to be unfounded as our stay was an enjoyable one overall. Like some reviewers pointed out, the hotel's facilities show signs of aging/wear and tear and could do certainly with some refurbishment, but we loved the beautiful, serene and remote location of the hotel within a sprawling estate with gorgeous views. Overall, we enjoyed the scenic views, the unique experience of staying in a historic property and the rustic charm of the hotel.

Our dog was made welcome, and there were plenty of other dogs in the hotel. Incredible evening meal in the restaurant, could not fault it. The staff were lovely and so helpful. Our room was beautiful - lots of special features including a four poster bed. Standing outside in the late evening there was no light pollution and we could see every star.

We love this hotel because of its setting, the friendly staff and the relaxed atmosphere. Unfortunately the radiator was broken in our room and it was uncomfortably hot overnight. We still really enjoyed our stay though.
