We went to Lecce to see the five famous Baroque churches. You can see them all in one day. Don't forget that Lecce follows the "afternoon nap or siesta" schedule like most small towns in Italy. Lovely city to relax and enjoy the architecture, history and local food! An education on how to enjoy pasta even more! We hired a car and we were able to drive to small towns and found some lovely little restaurants with local food! Lecce is beautiful - wonderful Baroque architecture and grand open spaces. After being in so many small hill towns in Puglia, it was a breath of fresh air. The old city of Lecce was very beautiful, extensive, and there is plenty to see even in the off-season. Was surprised that the basilicas are not free to enter. You need to buy a tourist ticket, which is not expensive, and allows you to go into all the locations. While we were there in November 2024, the Roman amphitheater was under reconstruction--you can look in but not sit inside. There are very limited places to eat dinner before 7:30 but after that time there are many excellent restaurants for different budgets. One full day was enough to enjoy the old city.
