If there were a rating higher than 10 this place should have it.
I was expecting very rustic but from the moment we arrived at the gorgeous reception it had the feeling of a 5 star hotel and our “room” which covered two floors was everything we hoped for-Authentic with a modern comfort.
All drinks were complimentary and we even had gift bags on the bed. The breakfast was an outstanding Japanese style where all dietary restrictions were met.
This was definitely a splurge for us but worth and the perfect final night in Japan before flying out of Narita.

Amazing hostel! We stayed the first two nights in a double bed, and then in the bunk bed dormitories. The dorms have lockers able to fit one large check-in suitcase. There are shared washrooms for the dorms, but everything is very clean. Free wifi, hairdryers, towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothbrush, toothpastes, and combs were provided. There is also a shared kitchen, common area, and terrace for guests to enjoy. While no breakfast is provided, you can make tea and coffee in the kitchen, and the nearest 7/11 is a 3 minute walk away. The hostel sported shoji doors, so you could hear guests through the wall, but we ultimately had no issues sleeping as quiet hours are set in place.
Ken was a wonderful and hardworking host. On the first night, we ended up loving both Sawara and the hostel so much we decided to stay an extra three nights! There is no doubt that Ken’s hospitality and kindness made our stay even better. He is also very smart and patient, able to understand much of our English. We had a great time here 🙂

Excellent breakfast and BBQ as well as onsen/spa area. The staff was exceptional, they went out of there way to make our stay special, we were late coming out of immigration and they waited for our group as well as taking us back to Narita Airport when we inadvertently missed the bus. We cannot stress enough how great they were and so very accommodating 😁

Great location about halfway round the Kasumigaura Lake ride. Beautifully renovated and they stored our bikes inside, which gave us peace of mind. Great Onsen.
Katori is a very interesting town. We enjoyed being able to walk around the town without having to make use of public transport as every thing was so handy. Great to see how people out of the big cities enjoy life.

Katori is a charming area, where the historic buildings along the canal and river transport you to a bygone era. The quaint restaurants and coffee shops provide the perfect setting to relax and unwind. I imagine it’s livelier in the summer than it was during our winter visit. At times, I felt it was almost too perfect, lacking the energy of street life.
