The facility was centrally located. The owners and staff were very accommodating. We were able to communicate adequately even though they didn't speak English and we didn't speak Japanese. The onsens were super clean and the water was toasty. We were impressed with our experience and would not hesitate to stay at the Takaraya again if we ever return to Kotohira.

This is a very modest place. Centrally located. No elevator, so you need to carry your luggage upstairs in steepy stairs. No chairs or stools. Just a bed - futon style.
You need to collect the key from a different place, nearby but difficult to find.
The shared kitchen is dirty and smells bed. They say they speak English, but they don't.
And like many places in Japan, there is no early check-in or late check out.
On average, 3-star hotels in Kotohira cost $187 per night, and 4-star hotels in Kotohira are $413 per night. If you're looking for something really special, a 5-star hotel in Kotohira can be found for $290 per night, on average (based on Booking.com prices).

I ejoyed my stay in the Kabuki theatre, where a well-knolweged guide gave a great commentary. The trip to Konpira San was interesting. You will enojoy the walk to the main builiding, the grand view of Kotohira, the souvenir stores, and the museum with old Japanese paintings and art works.

Relaxed atmosphere, nice walking courses around the hotel.
Relaxed atmosphere, nice walking courses around the hotel. The locals are friendly. The people in the restaurants and shops cater to non-Japanese speaking visitors - menus are in English, and they are equipped with translation apps.

Stunning property, with spacious, clean rooms that were well-equipped. We loved our outdoor bath and the view of the town from our room. Great location - a short walk to Konpira Grand Theatre and the main shrine in Kotohira, Konpira-san. Both are a must-visit. Tasty, traditional Japanese-style breakfast. We would love to return.
Perfect location less than a minute from the stairs to the shrine. Only a 10 minute walk to the train. Loads of shops line the stairs. The hotel itself was exceptional: staff, facilities, onsen, restaurant, room - all were absolutely top notch. One of our best stays in Japan!
Nice room. Bit small. Bathroom very small. Hotel bit out of the city center. Would recommend to take a taxi if you arrive by train with a lot of luggage. Big supermarket just outside.
