An an easy 10 minutę walk from the station, don't let the building's 1960's exterior deceive you, the dinner was superb, way beyond expectations, served in your room, fresh, local ingredients, grilled fish and grilled Hida beef, sautéed local mushrooms with a 'mentaiko' sauce, fresh sashimi, another white fish sautéed in a French butter/'wa-fu' sauce, plus more imaginative concoctions in the kitchen that were excellent with two local sakes we ordered, the wonderfully dry 'Horai' and an exceptionally creamy 'nigorizake'. We savored our meal slowly over two hours and finished it with green tea and a walk to the onsen bath. Did I mention the new tatami mats in the room? What's not to like? You can pay for more luxury, but this was excellent value for money. Note that you will be sitting on the tatami while you eat, which may bother some people.
The breakfast was also delicious, Japanese style, grilled local anago river fish, yudofu simmered in onsen water, Yama-imo and raw egg, dashimaki tamago, local sautéed mushrooms, tsukemono, miso soup, rice...mmmm.

Quiet and peaceful location. The spa pools were lovely. The courtesy shuttle bus to Hida Hagiwara station was appreciated, as we were travelling without a car.
It would be nice to have an alternative the kaiseki dinner each evening, as the food is excellent, but so much food!

Gero has so much to share, with food, including Hida beef, yes get familiar with it. It's top level Wagyu beef and is from Hida the region that Gero is situated. The city is easy to get around in the snow (in Winter) and in the rain (in Spring), with places that are easy to walk or ride share to. Gero to most is a journey to get to with taking the trains, but it's well worth the journey, having seen cherry blossoms in the ever greens AND the snow falling like in a "snow globe", encrusting the tress, during the train ride. We are fortunate to have experienced Gero twice and now looking for a third stay, in Autumn for the changing of the leaves!

Gero is a gorgeous town in the valley in Gifu.
Gero is a gorgeous town in the valley in Gifu. There is a much slower pace here, incredibly friendly people. and beautiful nature. There's many nooks and crannies where you'll find interesting things, and the Gassho-mura open-air museum village is a must-see area.

I did a one day trip, I went there just because of the naturals onsen, and it was the best decision, I arrived about 10:00 at leave at the same time of the next day. Honestly I don't think is a trip for more than 3 days.
Gero is a beautiful city, it has a few museums that can be seen in one period of the day. As the city is small, it doesn't need car or bus to go around if no one has fiscal disabilities.
This was my second time at Japan, and I regret not going to Gero the first time as well.

If you want to stay in Gero Onsen on a budget, Gerobal Hostel is perfect. It's very close to the station, and although the rooms are very simple, they are clean and the bedrooms were well heated in winter.
There are a number of public baths in Gero Onsen, so you can enjoy the hot springs for really very little money by staying here. I was able to leave my luggage after checking out, very welcoming and accommodating staff. Only has communal showers and toilets which were kept very clean.
Very nice hotel. Great location, nice and good English speaking stuff. Help with any question.
They have public onsen on basement level which is open whole night so you can visit it whenever you want.
This was my favourite accommodation of my 3 week Japan trip. Budget friendly but so beautiful and cute. Staff were amazing. I loved the onsen and everything about this town and hotel.
Wonderful view from the room and from a private onsen. Exceptionally comfortable futons. We also really liked Japanese diner and breakfast and overall experience in the hotel.
