Miri offers a quick getaway from Brunei. Transportation via ride-sharing remains extremely affordable, like the rest of Malaysia. People here are nice but I would highly recommend learning more about their different cultures and respecting various practices. Taman Negara Bukit Lambir is beautiful. However, the transportation there is a bit difficult—the best way to get around there is to borrow a scooter. The beaches in Miri are not good; they are dirty, have a lot of trash, and are not suitable for swimming. We used Miri as a jump off point for a day visit to The Kingdom of Brunei (which I was not impressed), but before and after we walked the Miri waterfront and went into the local area around the hotel. We felt safe everywhere and even purchase items at several 7/11’s. We even spent several hours in an open air 24hr coin laundromat washing and drying our clothes with nothing but smiles from locals. Afterwards we met 3 more of our party at the Ming Bar and Restaurant for satay and pandam chicken rolls. Communal iron & water dispenser provided in corridor. Room is small but sufficient for 2 pax to stay comfortably. Location is great, lots of eateries around, convenience store & a laundry within walking distance. And about 6 mins drive to Miri airport.
