This place was amazing. The hosts were great and you could tell from the moment you got there how much love n pride they put in this lodge. They thought of every little detail ,from books and activities when you walk in to all the amenities you could possibly need. The property was very well looked after ,so much knowledge about the area. We went to a concert up the road n we were told a trick about parking that saved us when driving out . We can't wait for our next visit. Thank you so much!

The location was stunning, up on a hill with a view of the ocean on one side, and a large valley of native forest on the other. A kaka (parrot) landed in the trees near us as we were checking in! The space itself was stunning, much larger and nicer than we had expected. We also had a couple of bedroom options that night given that we were the only guests. The hosts Brian and Alysn were lovely people, and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. They offered use of beach towels, sunshades, beach chairs, and basic snorkel equipment - and use of a bbq for cooking. We enjoyed the proximity to Tawharanui Peninsula (highly recommend the nightime Kiwi spotting tour with Kiwiness Tours) and the beaches and hiking in the park. We loved it so much we stayed a second night - and then booked to stay for our last night in NZ before our flight home from Auckland.

Good central location for exploring Matakana area. Clean and very well equipped kitchen. Host gave us lots of options for breakfast and ideas for exploring the area.

1. Kiwiness tours - nightime northern brown kiwi spotting tour. Highly recommend it, was so much fun!!
2. Tawharanui park itself - so many trails, so many birds, not enough time for us.
3. Goat Island snorkelling - you can rent equipment nearby and the snorkelling opportunities are excellent.
4. Book a bach/BnB and cook for yourselves (we recommend Kotare House), or you can drive to Matakana for dinners but not a lot of options. We preferred bbq'ing with a glass of wine and listening to nature and the birds!

Tawharanui is a beautiful part of Northland, with a variety of outdoor pursuits in the area. Its handy to Matakana, Omaha and Leigh and of course Tawharanui regional park. I wish we had had more time to explore.

Extremely picturesque beaches.
Extremely picturesque beaches. There were rocks and rockpools, strewn seaweed, a cave, white sand, rolling waves, places to climb and places to walk and plenty of surfing. The road is long and winding to reach the end of the peninsula but well worth the drive. There are lots of places to park but the parks were surprisingly full over Easter. Even so, the beach spaces were far from crowded. A lovely seemingly remote spot. Bring your own food and drinks.
