We booked an excursion with The Legendary Black Water...

We booked an excursion with The Legendary Black Water Rafting Experience Waitomo Caves and it was amazing! Our guides, Garret & Alicia, were fun, helpful, informative, and made sure were were safe in the cave & the water; this is is a must do! They take pictures for you because it would be impossible to float in a tube & take pictures yourself.

Our tour of the caves with a local guide was great.

Our tour of the caves with a local guide was great. It made all the difference that it was a local Māori guide telling us the historical story of the caves and those that first offered it for viewing. Our guide was funny and informative. The walkways were well lit and we felt safe the whole way round. Our grandchildren 11yrs and 8yrs loved the boat trip in the dark and were mesmerised by all the glow-worms.

On this trip we went with Spellbound Cave Explorer.

On this trip we went with Spellbound Cave Explorer. Went to two caves the first, after a short walkthrough bush we entered the cave and then got into a rubber raft where we were pulled along the underground stream , looking up at the ceiling it was covered with glow-worms. Very pretty & fascinating. After a coffee break we went into the second cave where we saw lots of stalagmites and stalactites and even the bones of an ancient extinct bird, the Moa. The guide was very knowledgeable and told us how the rock formations were formed. An excellent tour.

Stunning stalactites and stalagmite formations. A huge cave.

Stunning stalactites and stalagmite formations. A huge cave. The tour guide was well spoken and clear and sung beautifully to demonstrate the acoustics. Very clean and spacious walking areas, well supported stairs. Much bigger than imagined. The glow worms were so pretty it was like a stary night sky in the outback. Priceless experience.

    Glowworms good.

Glowworms good. Cave formations underwhelming compared to Tasmania and not value for money, tour guides were excellent though. Village pub and restaurant food was just average but staff were friendly and professional.

We did the Waitomo Cave boat tour in the evening before...

We did the Waitomo Cave boat tour in the evening before dinner and the Ruakuri Cave tour the next morning. They both were stunning. Guides were friendly and informative. We heard from another couple on the second tour that they had done several other caves and an exciting adventure (the Abyss if I remember correctly). I want to do that next time.

Angus was exceptional with his customer service ( this even trumped some 5 star hotels in Wellington) the accommodation was amazing with views people pay to see, plus at night the little glow worm hide away was just magic. The breakfast provided was well presented and more than we expected. Thanks for the exectial stay we highly recommend this stay.

Met the owners, Bob and Liz. Wonderful folks. Place was so serene. Stars were visible on a clear sky. Family cat was friendly to strangers. Morning was foggy and nice, fresh air. Breakfast was so tasty, butter, lovely jams and fruits. Jams were amazing. We were glad to have, being at this place for a night, for a great experience in our lives.

This was so much better than I expected. The room was really nice, better than many more expensive hotels. The couple running the inn are so nice. We chatted a lot, got really good advice on where to go. We also had a tasting of a dozen types of New Zealand honey at breakfast.

Very close to Waitomo Caves, so it was super convenient. We arrived late, so we didn't get to really experience the whole hotel area except sleep. The basics are met here.
