While the house itself is architecturally interesting, beautifully furnished, and features a breezy, albeit a bit dusty, roof terrace with a great view, our experience at Samaki House was disappointing due to the owner's poor handling of a booking mixup on their part. The manager on site was friendly, and the room we had booked and eventually stayed in for 2 out of 3 nights was bright and airy, but we were initially given a dark, moldy room with a bathroom encrusted in rust and with cockroaches scuttling about that we hadn’t booked.
Situated 200 metres from Gallery Baraka and 200 metres from Lamu Fort, Beytul Habaib features free WiFi and units fitted with a kitchen, balcony and seating area.

My recent two-nights stay at Beytul Habaib was an absolute pleasure, creating unforgettable memories. The Apartment Suite was incredibly spacious and offered a fantastic view that added to the charm of my stay. The staff were exceptionally helpful, ensuring all my needs were met with a smile. The security was top-notch, making me feel safe and comfortable throughout my visit.
One of the highlights was the unique wheezing sounds that gave the place a distinctive character. I thoroughly enjoyed the walk to the town center, where the locals were extremely friendly and welcoming. The management also arranged a town tour for me, rich in culture, as well as a sea tour, both of which were truly memorable experiences.
I highly recommend Beytul Habaib to anyone visiting Lamu. It’s the perfect blend of comfort, culture, and hospitality.

Since Stopover is the first guesthouse you see when arriving at Shela's seafront from Lamu, my gut instinct was to see where else we could stay, but we could not have imagined a more perfect, relaxing (and very clean) place. Hamid, the manager of Stopover, made us feel very comfortable and safe, and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Our 2nd floor balcony overlooking the sandy approach to Shela and line of fishing boats and dhows was a bargain itself. Add the mosquito-netted traditional Arabic beds, eager-to-please staff, and delicious fresh fish meals and you have the perfect spot to experience the varied cultures of Lamu island. You can wander around Shela village, walk the beach, or go into nearby Lamu town (for which I highly recommend Ali as a guide to introduce you to Arabic culture through his eyes). It is SAFE, relaxing, romantic and so interesting to experience. The Stopover (Shela location) is the perfect base for your Lamu adventure.

Tabassam guest house is good value for the money for few days. Nothing fancy but has a good location, cheap price, and the manager Mohammed is a good guy ready to help you with anything you possibly need. Recommended

We had an incredible stay at this beautiful 5-bedroom house. It was worth every coin! The home was spacious, clean, and beautifully decorated, providing all the comforts we needed. The location was perfect, and the amenities were top-notch. The host was exceptionally welcoming and responsive, making sure our stay was seamless from start to finish. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a luxurious and comfortable stay!
Warm and welcoming guest houses are ideal for travellers who prefer unfussy accommodation with a personal touch. They are usually family-run, and your host will provide local recommendations and optional meals. Often cheaper than regular hotels, guest houses can also feature a cosy living room and a garden.
We had a great stay here. Despite the power being out in all of Lamu, we made it work and the place was clean and comfortable. Jivanjee was a great host and greated us at the beginning and end of our stay as well as connected us to local guides.
Beautiful big room with lovely views from the terrace. Great location, quiet and walkable to the beach, restaurants etc, with a really nice spa right across from the centre. Staff very helpful and supportive with arranging tours and trips.
Amazing hosts and caretakers, always there to help and very kind. Lovely small touches, like flowers in the room and tips on what to do. Great location by the Seafront, with a beautiful view from the room and rooftop terrace.
Mohammed is a very great host. He welcomed me so nicely and offered a guide to show me around Lamu. We also made a food arrangement and him and his family cooked for me for the whole of my stay there which was affordable as food can be quite tricky when new. You will feel at home. I loved the upstairs rooms because of the ventilation, so would highly recommend those. It's also situated 7 minutes away from the main street so it will give you a good tour of old town when figuring out old town. Overall a great experience for budget travellers
One of the nicest accommodations in Kenya i have been so far. Arnold is a great host who has a lot of tips for Lamu. The place is very clean and ideally located in Lamu Town.
A remarkable property, full of history and character, and stylishly decorated. Our quiet room and private terrace at the back of the hotel overlooked charming rooftops, with dhows on the sea in the distance. The multiple pools, each set in its own secluded courtyard, are perfect for relaxing after a day exploring the island or the historic Old Town, and the waterside restaurant is totally delightful. Best of all, the team are so warm, welcoming and genuine - they really embody the spirit of Lamu and Kenya.
Arnold was a great host. The room we booked was very comfortable with a clean and nice bed. The rooftop has a great view of Lamu. The breakfast was well priced and filling.
