Very large room for single or 2 persons, can probably fit a whole family. Keiko was super nice and helpful and had great suggestions for restaurants. There’s just a lot of attention to every detail overall. The toilets even had the highest quality toilet paper I’ve ever seen in Japan😀 The price in summer/off season was very fair. There is no AC but it should unusually not be needed. Even when it was 37 degree in Tokyo it was only 25 in Zao onsen.

Absolutely loved my stay at Guesthouse Mintaro Hut! The home is very cozy and all the staff are very friendly and helpful. My favorite part was gathering for a delicious dinner every night cooked by the owner, Hide-san and their staff and getting to bond together over good food and drinks. The facilities are always clean and the rooms are spacious and cozy. Will definitely come back one day!

Featuring a garden, Snowfall Meteor 飛雪流星 is located in Kaminoyama in the Yamagata region, 2.2 km from Zao Onsen Ski Resort. The guest house features family rooms. A lovely and heartwarming place to stay for a winter getaway. The couple that owns this business made us feel like family. Mao and Qu are so kind and welcoming. They treated us like family. They picked us up from the bus station, drove us to a wonderful dinner location (which they recommended), drove us to the ski resort, and helped with all our luggage. I was so happy to meet them and talk with them. The room is just as warm as the owners. The floors are heated and the beds are very comfortable. I wish I could’ve stayed longer.

The meals were home-cooked, and quite delightful. The owner helped us facilitate a side trip in the area, very kindly. It's a remote rural location, which has its own beauty.

Staying at Shukubo Daishinbo in Tsuruoka, Japan, was one of the most enriching experiences of my trip. This 350-year-old temple inn, run by a Yamabushi family, offered me a unique opportunity to connect with Japan's spiritual and cultural heritage in a deeply meaningful way. The location of Shukubo Daishinbo couldn't have been more perfect. Nestled at the base of Mount Haguro, it served as an ideal starting point for exploring the sacred Dewa Sanzan mountains. Each morning, I had the chance to participate in the rituals led by the resident Yamabushi, which was both a serene and enlightening experience. The blend of Shinto and Buddhist practices, known as Shugendo, is something I’d never encountered before, and it gave me a new perspective on spirituality and nature. But what truly made my stay unforgettable was the food. The meals at Shukubo Daishinbo were incredible, reflecting the best of Shojin Ryori, the traditional Buddhist cuisine. Each dish was crafted with care, using local, seasonal ingredients, including wild mountain vegetables. The flavors were delicate yet profound, and every bite felt like a celebration of the region's natural bounty. The connection between the food and the surrounding landscape was palpable, making each meal a deeply meditative experience. The peaceful atmosphere of Shukubo Daishinbo, combined with the warmth and hospitality of the hosts, made me feel like I was part of something truly special. Whether it was joining the morning prayers, hiking up Mount Haguro, or simply relaxing in the tranquil surroundings, every moment spent here was nourishing for both my body and soul. If you're looking to immerse yourself in Japan's spiritual traditions or just want to unwind in a serene and beautiful setting, I can't recommend Shukubo Daishinbo highly enough. It’s more than just a place to stay—it’s an experience that will stay with you long after you leave.

Yamagata Guest House býður upp á herbergi í Murayama, í innan við 50 km fjarlægð frá Zao Onsen-skíðasvæðinu og 500 metra frá Murayama-stöðinni. Samu-Kun and Ki-Chan welcomed me very nicely in this past school. The dorm is decorated with good taste, japanese typical style. The living room is spacious in the past class room, with a Family Computer waiting for you to play the original Mario Bros. All the spaces are extremely clean and quiet.

Shukubo Kanbayashi Katsukane er staðsett í Mount Haguro-hverfinu í Tsuruoka og er 24 km frá Kamo-sædýrasafninu og 47 km frá Shinjo-stöðinni. The staff was very kind and the place was nice and traditional. It was exactly what I hoped to see. The food was tasty with large quantities. Thank you very much!!!!

GUEST HOUSE BLUE DOORS - Vacation STAY 73130v er staðsett í Yamagata. Íbúðin er með ókeypis einkabílastæði og er 17 km frá Zao Onsen-skíðadvalarstaðnum. Spacious, comfortable for family/friend group. All necessary amenities provided. There are many car parks in the area if you are traveling with multiple vehicles. The owners were very friendly, welcoming and generous.

Set in Tsuruoka in the Yamagata region, 大聖坊 Daishobo offers accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking. I felt like family and yet had all the privacy I required. The Master was gracious to include me in the morning prayers. This stay was the best possible addition to my time on Mt Haguro and learning lore about the spirituality of the Yamabushi and the DewaSanzan. The food was incredible, so healthy and much was grown locally. It was the best place I stayed in my two weeks in Japan.
