So happy we came across this little gem of a place. Tucked in at the end of a quiet private country lane, Polaris offered us a perfect base to explore Eastern Hokkaido. It is a very easy drive from the property to see Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo and visit the Cranes in Tsurui. The lodge is small (but our room was very spacious), charming, pristinely clean, warm and welcoming. The moment we stepped into the lodge, noticed owners' great attention to detail. A lot of thought and care went into creating this lovely place: from a flowering coffee tree in the dining area to room amenities, to binoculars offered to enhance our birdwatching experience. Every morning we woke up to bird song and a fantastic snow view from our window. If you lucky, you will see a Shima-enaga, a gorgeous white Long-tailed tit native to Hokkaido, coming to say hello. Breakfast was sumptuous and delicious and multi-course dinner offered a few local specialties beautifully cooked and presented. The owners take a great pride of Hokkaido and will help you with your trip planning. If you like peace and quiet, privacy, dark sky away from resort crowds, this place is for you!
Featuring 1-star accommodation, Traveler's Inn Asanebo is located in Teshikaga, 10 km from Lake Mashu and 14 km from Lake Kussharo.

Fantastic local hospitality and local knowledge of the area. Taka-San and Aki-San were so generous with their time. They prepared delicious meals and gave us an incredible sightseeing experience (for a very reasonable additional fee) of this stunning area. We highly recommend visiting Kawayu Onsen and staying here for an authentic experience. We enjoyed socialising over communal meals and tea. I also liked the local hot onsen (just down the road) and Aki-San drove us there and back in the snow. It was a highlight of our trip to stay with Taka-San and Aki-San and be shown this incredible landscape.
Set just 15 km from Lake Mashu, TESHIKAGA HOSTEL MISATO features accommodation in Teshikaga with access to a terrace, a shared lounge, as well as a minimarket.
Conveniently situated in the Kawayu Onsen district of Kawayu, EZO HOUSE is located 11 km from Lake Kussharo, 13 km from Lake Mashu and 27 km from Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park.

Ezo house has lots of character. The shared area was more than sufficient for our group of six. The rooms were very homey, comfortable and well kept. It’s easy to see the owner cares a lot. And there’s a cat!
Travellers on a budget looking to experience a place like a local will enjoy homestays. This simple accommodation is in a private home, where the host also lives. All facilities are shared and in most cases breakfast is included.
The owners were amazing and helped a lot with possibilities to visit around the area and all of Hokkaido. Not only did the owner speak really good English for Japan, his wife was also very eager learning each day and getting better. It was really great being able to exchange so much with locals. Highly recommended.
Also the food was absolutely amazing and I was struggling to eat all of it.
Friendly people with authentic homestay with nice home cooked meal in location close to active volcano and lake kussharo and Maschu. Host dropped us off a train station.
Our hosts were very welcoming and spent time chatting with us in the evening. It’s an authentic Japanese homestay experience. Thanks for a most enjoyable visit
Absolutely lovely hosts who are willing to help you with anything. They were a tremendous help to us when my partner hurt is ankle pretty badly. I honestly couldn’t wish for more loving and caring hosts. The meals were delicious! The accomodation itself was very clean, spacious and cute. Lots of squirrels and birds outside during breakfast! I have absolutely no complaints.
Taka and Aki were great hosts, made us feel extremely welcome and had loads of great advice for the best things to see and do in both the local area and other parts of Hokkaido. The dinners and breakfasts were lovely with a wide variety of freshly prepared food - as they are served at one large counter table it is a great opportunity to meet other travellers and share travel tips and a few drinks :)
