I paid for dinner and I'm SO glad I did. It was a highlight of my stay and in deed a highlight of my 5 week trip in Japan. You sit in a sunken seating area and watch the ryokan owner/cook prepare what felt like a large number of individual dishes. The food was absolutely delicious.
I was concerned about hearing other guests because, being an older house, the walls are thin - but the night I was there all the guests were respectfully quiet.
I had a view over the "river" which may be a mis-nomer - but it is a peaceful stream running through the pretty street.
I highly recommend a visit.

SpainThe location was excellent, but there were many issues. The amenities box was almost empty, the shower room didn't have tissues left, the shower itself was full of hairs, there was a lingering weird smell everywhere. We didn't get notified of how to check out, the check-in was very impersonal, only getting a message on booking. The security also left us worried, as one of our beds could not be closed on one side, leaving the sliding door open to anyone. Overall a bad experience.

CanadaVibes of the accomodation were fantastic, fellow guests were very chatty and there was lots of games to play. We used the provided bicycles to ride to a restaurant one night, bikes are in great condition. Got a chance to meet the owner, he is very nice

There is an onsen which you can use privately as long as no one else is using it at the time. The manager is awesome, he offers you a lift to the station when you checkout which we greatly appreciated. There are some bikes you can rent for free, but make sure you ask early. I also borrowed a bike from them to ride around the city and had some lovely views of the sunset over the lake. Everythung was clean and tidy with very nice and strong AC! The hotel actively discourages overuse of single-use products such as amenity items. You can also get room package deals that are cheaper by not having full cleaning every day.
