I really loved my stay at Guest House Kura. Firstly the beds were really comfortable. It was lovely to have a heated blanket on my bed. The duvet was really comfortable and the room felt very cosy. Although there is only one bathroom and toilet, I never had to wait to use any of the facilities and they were always clean. You can purchase food and drinks at Guest House Kura and they have lots of recommendations of where to eat and drink locally. Tassei even organised for vegan bento boxes to be delivered to Guest House for us after our long day visiting the snow monkeys. This was such a kind gesture and he was always very acommodating of all of our needs. He even drove me to a local onsen and picked me back up afterwards. There is a Lawson’s a few minutes walk away and Suzaka station is just over a 15 minute walk. It was a great location to visit the snow monkeys from and the staff will give you all the relevant directions you need. It was a sociable hostel and I was able to meet people easily. Although it’s sociable hostel, you can also get a very nice sleep and there is a very mixed demographic staying at the hostel as I also saw families with younger children. It’s a very small quiet town which felt like a lovely escape away from the larger Japanese cities. It’s very reasonably priced to wash and dry your clothes (400 yen for a wash and dry). There is also a kitchen space available for you to cook should you wish to.
Overall I would really recommend anyone to stay at Guest House.

The room is quite small, we can't open all of our luggage, but the staff can speak English so it does help in communication.
Featuring a hot spring bath and a terrace, Nozaru is a 7-minute drive from Yudanaka Station. It offers Japanese-style rooms, free WiFi at the lobby and a games room.

Great location, excellent value, big room, fridge, nice but small onsen, free parking in front of hotel, shared kitchen was unexpected and convenient to make coffee in the morning, very good hostel and privacy!
Situated in Kusatsu, 45 km from Jigokudani Monkey Park, Kusatsu Kogen Youth Hostel features accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a shared lounge and ski-to-door access.
Budget travellers know that there is no better way to make the most of their trip than by staying at a hostel: save money for exploring during the day, and swap stories with fellow backpackers in the shared kitchen or bar in the evening. Dorm-style bedrooms with shared bathrooms are standard hostel fare, but private rooms are also available for those willing to pay a bit more.
The upstairs room was very clean and was easy to set up. The heaters made it super toasty in the snowy weather. Our host was super welcoming and friendly. There’s a breakfast option which we could pay for and it was worth it! The food was delicious and the servings were very generous. It’s a great location for heading to the snow fields or the snow monkeys, super easy to find and get to transport options.
The location is very convenient if arriving by train - only a few minutes walk. Also restaurants within walking distance. If arriving by car/motorbike there's a few parking spots.
Seki-san, the owner, is extremely friendly and helpful! She also cooks a mean (japanese-style) breakfast, highly recommended :)
The shared room is split into private rooms using a big divider and even so there were only 2 beds, not 4 as advertised, so definitely less "hostel" and more "hotel" - no bunk-beds here!
