Life in Mayenne began with the 2,000 BC Gauls, & Roman Jublians a few klms east of the city, C.800AD the first Chateau Mayenne was built by Charlemagne to defend the border with Brittany. The city has seen Publius Crassus in 53BC, the Vikings in the 9thC, William to Conquer 11thC, Jean d'Arc & her army 15thC, the 1790 guillotine & the French Revolution to 1944 liberation by General Patton in WW2. Located in on the river valley of the Mayenne, and surrounded by lush green farmland. Famous for its President, Bon Mayennais & Baby Bel soft cheeses, pear and apple cidre, Textiles from Toiles de Mayenne.
