On the banks of the Marne and on the edge of the Bois de Vincennes, archeological digs show that people have been living in this area for more than 16,000 years! Its strategic location, at the confluence of the Marne and the Seine, was the reason why the city built a bridge several millennia ago. A true emblem of the town, it fixed the crossing of the town to the roads coming from the east. Since the old regime and even more so in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Charenton-le-Pont attracts a Parisian population consisting of artists, workers, employees, bourgeois or aristocrats. From the second half of the twentieth century, the renovation of the urban space of Charenton saw the destruction of some historic districts of the city for the development of major roads, shopping centers and office buildings.
