We have fantastic views out over the bay and out to sea and parking for two cars - a real rarity! The house has been the subject of an imaginative and extensive revamp which means the pleasant but plain exterior hides a light-filled, stylish and comfortable place to stay. There is a dining deck straight off the kitchen and onto the garden at the back (south - the side with the sea and views). There is a very eclectic mix of housing on our little no-through road - it starts with a run of pretty Victorian villas, then a stretch of a dozen or so pleasant but plain council and ex-council houses, (of which this is one - extended and revamped), then the mega buck pads at the end. Most of us have fantastic views and I think I am right in saying that it is the nearest road to the sea which offers parking - which is a rare thing in St Mawes! The old fishing cottages certainly have more charm externally, but they very rarely have parking (or big windows, or high ceilings).... The house (and most of the village) is set onto a steep hillside which curves around the bay. The walk down to the harbour is short, but steep. For us, this means that the road at the front (N) is a bit higher than the house, and the garden at the back (S) is lower. Parking and decking are raised and have discreet railing, but it is not child-proof and you need to supervise them and take care yourselves. It is sadly unsuitable for anyone with mobility issues. If you have a child in a buggy - coming home will be a good little work-out! PLEASE NOTE that we do not accept more than three children or more than five adults within any party (max six people overall). STOP PRESS!! Just been awarded a 2025 Travellers' Review Award by booking dot com - 9.5 out of 10 overall score last year. Yippee!!
I have spent my life travelling - as the founder of an international travel company. Before that I was an archaeologist and now I write and am a researcher and very involved Granny. I have always preferred staying in small, personal places and appreciate individual style, cleanliness, comfort and light above the gyms and the glitz of the big hotels. Accessible location and open views are very important. We have tried to make our house feel light, bright, spacious and comfortable. As one guest said: "it has everything you need and nothing you don't", and we loved that! It's all about the view, and comfort, and it has both those in spades...
St Mawes is an exceptionally pretty village on a sheltered curving bay open to the sea. You can opt to stay put for your whole stay and it will provide pretty much everything you need - as long as you like the sea, or walking. But there are some great places to visit fairly close by: fabulous gardens at Trewithen, the Lost Gardens of Heligan or the Eden Project. And a day out to St Ives is very rewarding of course. You just have to go to Falmouth on the ferry - fun shops and cafes there too as well as a National Maritime Museum. And our house is a great place to come back to - tired but happy! Our no-through road is composed of mixed houses: starting with a row of pretty Victorian villas, then a dozen or so plain but pleasant 1950's council and ex-council houses (of which ours was one) and ending in some million pound pads at the end. It's a real community here and the housekeeper lives close by so if you need anything, we'll do our best to make it materialise quickly!
