Housed in a historic building, The Little House features accommodation with a garden and free WiFi in Devizes, 15 km from Lacock Abbey. The property has inner courtyard and quiet street views, and is 32 km from Lydiard Park. The property is non-smoking and is situated 29 km from Stonehenge. The 1-bedroom holiday home features 2 living rooms with a flat-screen TV, a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and oven, and 1 bathroom with walk-in shower. A unique holiday let that is exclusively yours, offering well-appointed accommodation and a welcome pack providing a continental breakfast on the first morning of your stay. Accessed via covered alleyway, through the two foot thick Bridewell wall into the parlour. There is a fitted kitchen with oven, induction hob, microwave, fridge, dishwasher and breakfast bar. The steep narrow stairs lead to the bedroom which can be configured as double or twin (at your request) with flat screen TV. The contemporary bathroom comprises shower, heated towel rail, wash basin & WC. The Little House, Grade ll listed, has a fascinating history. The upper floor is part of a flying freehold held by the house, now numbered 9A. This dwelling was built C1730 and still has its original stone roof tiles. The building adjacent to this was part of the Bridewell mainly used as a lock up from 1817 until 1836, when it was converted to a police station. In 1879 the Bridewell was auctioned along with the associated land. The Little House was created out of the flying freehold and what was the cart entrance to the prison yard, this is the reason the ceiling is so high in the parlour!
When we found this quirky house we saw the potential to create a cosy and welcoming base for visitors. We have undertaken most of the refurbishment ourselves incorporating the features we like to find when we are self-catering as well as some unique Little House comforts, including a welcome pack. This has the elements for a continental breakfast, allowing our guests the freedom to decide what time to have breakfast on their first morning! Whatever your reason for visiting, the Little House will be your home from home. Devizes offers a host of cultural facilities including The Wiltshire Museum 2 minute’s walk from the Little House, The Wharf Theatre, a cinema and a vibrant live-music scene. We love exploring the local area; Devizes is set amidst Wiltshire's chalk down lands, which is criss-crossed by ancient byways as well as some more modern additions like Wiltshire’s Chalk Horses. Prehistoric earthworks abound, including Silbury Hill, West Kennet Long barrow, the Sanctuary, Avebury stone circle and Stone Henge. We love visiting Crofton steam pump and Wilton Windmill. We hope you enjoy your stay and make the most of the amenities Devizes and the surrounding area offer.
The Little House is a great base from which to explore Devizes. You will find a wealth of listed buildings and the town still maintains the ‘D’ shape street layout following the medieval town wall. Look out for the Mediaeval Town Trail and follow its route. During the Civil War the town was a base for the nearby Battle of Roundway Down. There are still the holes made by cannon balls in the tower of St James Church! In the prosperous Georgian era many of the towns’ finest buildings were erected. Further developments included the Kennet & Avon canal, a waterway joining London to Bristol and famed for Caen Hill flight of twenty-nine locks, an engineering and aesthetic marvel and an easy walk from the Little House you will even pass Wadworth‘s Brewery on Northgate Street where you can book a tour and tasting or take a trip on Kenavon Venture, walking & cycling are popular. Within 20 miles are Bowood House, Lacock Abbey, Marlborough, Farleigh Hungerford Castle, Great Chalford Manor, Iford Manor Gardens, Bratton Camp and White Horse, Bradford upon Avon, Longleat. Chippenham and Pewsey stations are only 12 miles away running train services to and from London Paddington. .
